I'm like you, I make 1 trip per week to LA from Phoenix. I'm away from home 4 nights per month, so the way it sounds I could be exempt. Maybe someone with a better understanding could put in their .02.

I don't think even the lawmaker's have a understanding. I hear they are meeting this week to try and decide what devices will be compliant. For the guys who are borderline exempt and run legal I would wait for the list of approved devices and go with the cheapest one just to be rid of the hassle. I personally don't believe in HOS laws at all, so I'm not a cheerleader for eld's but it's here.
It's just another clown show gov regulation and nobody knows how the grey areas will be enforced but it will be a cash cow for state enforcement and I'm pretty sure for the first year guys who even look like they fall into that grey area will be targeted for inspections like white on rice.

FMCSA is still writing and revising some of the rules and this is all to be implemented within the next nine months without a hitch? It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and how long it takes for FMCSA to admit to "a major bungling of a mass experiment" ELDS are just one more stress factor drivers will have to deal with

James, the ELDs are only mandatory for those that would normally be required to run paper logs. If you only run short haul, you're not really defying the law. Just be sure to have your hours tallied if you go beyond the short haul air mile radius. It's good practice to have 7 days previous hours with you to avoid conflict with the Officials, as I have been told by Investigators that they look for it, especially until the mandate settles in and there are more definitive rules in place. Because you are running short haul and only go outside that a few times a year, as of yet, there should be no reason for you to install these. Just be careful and keep a look out for new rules.

And it looks like this is another one of those times when it does need to be stirred.

You are a trucker. In the eyes of the government, you don't qualify for "rights."

Be a cold day in hell when you see them admit any fault. After all, THEY are the government, we are just truckers.

I just heard now they are mandating E toilet paper.
You bring up an app on your smart phone and a picture of toilet paper pops up and then you wipe your ### with it.
The dot study sited this could prevent up to five truck stop toilets per year from clogging.
Oh and you must present your #### covered phone to the dot officer upon inspection to be compliant or you will be put out of service.
