First time in drivers set friday I spent Friday Saturday and Sunday at in laws backing. There was a few vans and trees I had to negotiate for alley dock. He just let me go. First time took 45 mins. By Saturday did it in 6 minutes with 2 pull ups. Went out on the road Sunday night. Could not downshift one time. Couldn't get it to drop into gear. I know you need to do this here going around turns to pass cdl road test. Any pointers? I keep thinking I need to get this down especially for grades when I do get on the road. Seems like when I put in neutral to down shift I can't get the rpms where they need to be to get it back in gear. Any tips would help me out
thanks!!

No school?

Are you double clutching?
You need to increase the RPMs to match what the lower gear will need when downshifting. The thread at http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...om-new-drivers/221892-shifting-questions.html has some tips on shifting that might be helpful.Skunk_Truck_2590 and NJ Newbie Thank this. -
i haven't been in the trucks at school yet

Hey ain't nothin' wrong with getting some quality wheel time before actually hitting the school. Kudo's on that.
NJ Newbie and truckermario Thank this. -
Where are you going to drive? I ll make sure I am parked if nearby

Your worried about him and your from Chicago? I'd be more worried about those idiot illegals you have there.
Op I use this method, if its bogging but still pulling just gradually losing speed ill do quick rev to 1500-1600 and go in to next gear down. -
OP if you're having trouble with your downshifts pay attention to your tach on the upshifts. If you have for instance a 300 rpm drop between each gear you will need to increase your rpm 300 rpms when you drop a gear. That's an example of course every truck is different when it comes to shifting.
Also remember when you're slowing down and dropping gears don't pull the truck out of gear take the revs up and get on the brakes and then try to catch your gear. It'll change everything and makes catching gears hard. Start slowing down long before you have too and drop gears that way so you don't have to be on the brakes while shifting. Keep the Jake off when you're shifting too.
Shifting takes time and practice. Backing is an art takes a long time to become proficient at. We all have days when we can't hit a spot. Took me 45 minutes to hit a dock a couple weeks ago. And that was a 45 sight side. Only took 5 minutes to hit a 45 blind side 10 hours before. It happens.
Just keep practicing and you will get things down. Practice double clutching and what not because they want you to dou me clutch on the test why I do not know but that's what the book and testers say. Just keep working at it and you will get it down.NJ Newbie Thanks this. -
i think my problem was I was trying to work the clutch, brake and rev the engine all at the same time too much to think about all at once!! Thanks for the advice!!
