Thats good, driving a manual car gives you bad habits. Its a different beast. If you drive a car manual to much you will try to start the truck in reverse. Also, you dont put the clutch all the way in like a car.

Most want you to double. They would rather pay for clutchs then trans. If you float correctly its better then double for the truck, but if you are bad at it, floating is way worse. Like others said, once you leave the yard do what you wan't, but if you destroy a trans early do to constant poor floats, they will figure out you wernt doubling. I recommend get double down pat before you learn to float. thn do whatever you want.

I was originally taught to double clutch..I obtained my CDL 13 years ago using that method.

If I had to double clutch today? NO WAY!! I lost that skill long ago! I can however float gears UP and DOWN a 13 speed and never hear/feel a gear..(Super 10 also)

    Good luck

If your gonna float, thats how it has to be to not damage anything.

Just don't think you're going to impress instructors, or more importantly, company testers with floating. You float during an interview, they might just think you're another rookie driver that will wear their transmissions out faster than the rest, even if you weren't grinding. Grinding without the clutch is gonna do considerably more damage than grinding while you try to double clutch.

    my 2 cents worth -
    Scenario
A truck goes into the shop , and no signs of wear on parts that should show wear
from double clutching are to be found , and the manual that comes with the truck
clearly states that truck is to be double clutched .
    Questions -
    Who pays for it ?
If it's a co. truck , do you think the driver will have a job the next day ?

My school taught D/C and floating, but we were only allowed to float in the 6 or higher range. When I road tested for Central Refrigerated, the guy doing the assessment had never heard of only floating in the high range. Can anyone shed some light on why someone would only float 6 or higher? Is there more forgiveness in the RPMs?

Coming out of school, I thought that was the norm. So, I was surprised when the Central guy was confused.
