Been working the day shift my entire life. Now I’m being forced to drive third shift, 12am-9am. I’m having a hell of a time sleeping.

Any advice on how to get more rest before I walk out on this job??

How long have you been at 3rds?

You have to change your HABITS. It usually takes about 60 days to reset your habits.

I used to work 7pm to 7am. I pretty much had to change my habits and it takes time.

For me, that meant not going straight to bed after work. Going to bed right after work meant I was up and awake 3-4 hours prior to driving to work that evening. I'd cook breakfast and play video games for an hour or 2 in the morning, then go to sleep so that I'd wake up with enough time to get ready for work.

    1) do not drink any energy drinks, or high sugar drinks or caffeinated drinks at least 3-4 hours before your shift is done.

    2) DO NOT go directly to bed, when you get home. relax, maybe read the news paper, maybe take a shower, shave, maybe a slice of toast. all to unwind a bit, and to take away any hunger pains (the ONE slice of toast)

    3) make your bedroom as dark as you can

those melatonan(sp?) products or ANY SLEEP AID NEVER worked for me, your mileage may vary

it takes a while to fall into this new routine, and some say that you should keep this routine 7 days a week.

i never did. when i was off duty, i'd go to bed at night like a normal person.

and I DID 3rd shift, dedicated night work, or line haul for over 40 years. the rest of my 48 was OTR or some local.

meaning, i'd rarely ever seen the sun in the sky.

    but i ain't no vampire........

    good luck.

I take 2 OLLY pills and one 10 mg. Melatonin.
Get them at Sam's Club online shopping.

Even a chicken has a enough sense to go to bed at night, whoever wants you to drive 3rd shift thinks that you are dumber than a chicken!

SOME of us (myself) drive 3rd shift for the pay differential, and less traffic, and have successfully adapted after 5 years at the same company/same shift; just saying. o

Once the o/p adapts, around 60 days (or less, even!) like six and A'model stated, he may even enjoy it more...as do I.
