Had an interesting conversation this morning with another driver.
I didn't know too much about his the outfit he worked for so I asked how he like working for them. He said they were okay, was treated well, and so on.
He did mention they paid him a percentage of the freight.
When I asked if he gets to see the invoice the company bills the customer, he said "no" and just kinda shrugged it off.
I didn't say anything but it struck me that if he does not know what the company is getting paid, what guarantees does he have he's getting an accurate percentage of the load?
Any thoughts on this from the veterans out there?

My guess he doesn't. He just heard at the lunch counter, that you make bank running percentage. So he signed up with a 1099 percentage deal with no benefits and is not even smart enough to calculate what he earns percentage wise.

I'm willing to bet not many if any show load pay. I never saw with 3 companies I worked for otr. The last company paid good. So i didn't compalin.I was with them 3 years. The first 2 hauled the typical cheap and tarped crap. So pay wasn't that great. Specially with the free tarp labor figured in.

Any co that pays percentage has to show you the billing if you ask. If you never ask.....
Some people are drivers, some hold a steering wheel. A few make this their business. But only a few.PoleCrusher, Lepton1 and EatYourVeggies Thank this. -
Yeah...unless you can see the invoice (and hope they haven't falsified any numbers), it has to be a matter of time before the employer starts skimming off the top.

The problem with seeing the rate cons. Is that's all one is going to see, IF he gets to see that.
My first company told me 25% AFTER fuel. The 3rd company just told me 25%.
So how do you get to see what the load pays. AFTER fuel? Cuz there's certainly no papertrail for the office to file.
A lot of you don't seem to take that in to consideration. FUEL comes out before you get your 25%. AND, there's probably other expenses that may or may not get taken out also. I don't think ANY company in the country is going to make up an itemized rate sheet of what came out before the driver gets his percentage.
And for all you that say we shouldn't work for ANY company that won't pay us $.50 per mile.
My 25% with the first company averaged out to be $.30 per mile. Except for my first load of onions which paid me $.45 per mile. The second company paid $.32 per mile. Not percentage. The 3rd company averaged around $.38 per mile. @ 25%
Ask to see the rate con and you'll get told it's none of your D--- business.EatYourVeggies Thanks this. -
Seems you work for bad companies. And the rate con IS your business.PoleCrusher, spyder7723, Lepton1 and 3 others Thank this.

The last company paid good.
Yeah, every company is a BAD company around here. I"m not relocating to the humidity side of the country though. But i guess i could go work for the likes of england, pride, or albertsons and pull a refer. Or one of the dozens of fed ex contractors and have a dedicated cross country trip.
Point out the regulation though, that makes the rate con our business. Then point out the regulation that shows how we're supposed to get paid on that rate con.Last edited: Mar 10, 2017

Good old companies did give percentage owner operators a copy of the actual invoice...I'd bet most are closed or bought out by now [Krajack did this, long gone now.].
First carrier I worked for bragged how he paid 64.3% [ instead of 62% like our competition] except he omitted the 10% deduction he made for himself before the calculations...
We had a rate sheet, free for the asking, listing the shaved rates...
The only way would be to ask and hope you get the honest answer. I also remember that if the rates are shown on your settlement, the carrier isn't required to show the invoices...EatYourVeggies Thanks this. -
Just to clarify, companies are not obligated to show the invoice to the driver even if he's getting paid a percentage?
If that's true, it's just a question of when and how often companies will cheat the drivers from a fair settlement.
