Great posts from Rollin here, he is honestly one of the few here that really has great hold of the owner op biz, there's much to learn from him.

That was my brother's saying lol. You need the attitude that you've got nothing to lose. They'll hear that. They'll hear it when your unsure, downtrodden, and defeated too (hey that happens to me too after about a month). I can size up in about 15 or 20 seconds if the call is going to be anything. None of the catch phrases or sales-ology they were taught in broker school phases me. I will find out what they're really thinking and if they really need a truck r real quicklike. It's sort of like speed dating. If they'really saying anything that sounds remotely like cries for a truck they're buying a little more time. These people at these billion dollar non-asset companies, you can say things to them you would never dare say to your local direct connect. You have all the power in the world over them once you break thru all that broker speak and they really tell you that they need your truck. And you set your rate. Of course rejection is a big part of it. If you can't handle rejection you won't get very far. Part of the job. And so it goes. And oddly enough you will get respect from these people some of them will even call you up again and again lol. Nothing to it really. Just don't bowl over. I know guys who are more aggressive than me that do the same thing every day. They don't talk about it they just do it.
Tennesseahawk, SL3406, RANGER68 and 1 other person Thank this. -
.40 cost of fuel per mile
.12 fixed cost per mile. Inc fhut, ucr, cell, land line, dat accounting ect, insurance, 40 k collision
.15 parts & repairs per mile
.67 per mile based on 110 K miles per year.
DNIC truck payment. I run a 1994 KW & 2000 Mac FB with my own authority. 22 years
my gross rev per all miles in 2014 1.74. Fuel cost .51
the above figures are for fuel cost for 2015
rev per mile for 2015 1.71. Rates seem to be somewhat steady dispite lower fuel cost
i typically run VA - TX. - NW - west TN - Va.
Hope this helps
run spot market but I know who to call before landing in these areas
I purchase fuel by subtracting state tax first. To determine. Pump price. I recieved $28.00 check on IFTA 4th Q 2014 -
gotta love ya Epmtrucks, you got your tail end handed to you a couple years ago when you claimed your operating cost was 87 cents per mile, now you're back saying it's 67 cents per mile. I suppose it will be 47 cents per mile by next year, eh ? whatever.
"Rates seem to be somewhat steady" - uhhh, yah, when you pretty much insist they let you haul it as cheaply as possible your rates don't change much bud.
Oh wait, you "know who to call before landing" to get that $1.71/mile. priceless.fortycalglock and Hurst Thank this. -
I can show you. I hear you talking. Lets see how well you dance. Dont talk or be a critic. Lay it on us. Im very happy in my long distance lanes I run. Are you?
-
Oh, I'm not being critical. Your costs are 1/2 everyone elses running a flatbed. gotcha, 40 cpm fuel, sure buddy. A 94 KW and 2000 Mac with no replacement cost and 15 cpm covers repairs, tires, brakes, everything. wow, you are amazing ! And your other cost all together cost little more than some pay for insurance alone. sounds legit to me.

Hammered by the IRS. I dont get hammered by opinion. Only fact. Critics supply, well, criticism.

By all means. Share the wealth.
By your numbers I'm doing something wrong. I'd like to see where I can do better.

Rolling Coal, Let's not forget one big difference between us. I will be a startup, you are already established. It will take me a little while to get there but I will. I will not have the luxury of an known business or name and it will take me a little while to work into the quality miles your talking about. But that is the goal. I hear every word your saying about "not working just for the sake of working" and agree with you 110%.
My stated weekly average is probably to aggressive. Thanks for calling that to my attention. I've been basing it on 120K miles per year and a 48 week year. Just to check that, I'm running scenarios based on loads I find on load boards that I would be willing to take. I'm looking at weather and taking other things ( home time, Hours of service, the occasional inspection, etc.) into account that all have an impact an I'll run logs on those weeks just to see where I fall out. I realize my analysis is only theoretical but it's the best I can do now. It will help me learn market and lane fluctuations and also force me to study the regulations. I've always ran paper logs so I'll have to dig into the different E-log systems and develop an understanding of them also.
Initially I will have to lease to someone and for cost comparisons I run the scenarios I mentioned earlier on load board rates. I'm assuming (hoping) a Mercer, Landstar or anyone else will have freight at or better then the load boards. Plus, it's the only info I have right now. I plan on pulling my own trailer and therefore I back out what a typical lease will take. I'm looking at revenue to the truck not gross of the load. I'm even going to the extreme of running first year taxes to see how to best maximize my investment and continuing that to see what the affects after the equipment has depreciated (I love my country but we're back to point of taxation without representation. Our politicians are not helping us).
Thanks again for your input it is appreciated.RANGER68 Thanks this.
