Yes I have a 2005 International 9400I with a C-13 Cat assert 435. The issue that I am having is everytime I fuel I drain my fuel filter and everytime I do so I hear air either going in or coming out before fuel drains out. Is this normal or do I have a leak somewhere and how do I fix it? When I drain the air out I see a big improvement in my fuel mpg. So I am thinking some thing just might be wrong so if you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks:biggrin_2553:

Think about turning a gallon of water upside down to pour it out. You notice how there are times where air is getting sucked in? Same thing's going on when you drain your separator, the fuel that's leaving is replaced with air.

How do you know you're seeing a big improvement in fuel mileage when you drain the filter if you drain it every time you fuel? Do you mean that the truck's computer display shows your fuel mileage going up? If so, you can fix that by putting a piece of electrical tape over the screen, and calculate your fuel mileage by dividing your miles driven by gallons used.

my C15 is the same way. I wonder if the Cat fel system has more pressur than other brands because my old N14 and M11 didn't do that.

Everytime I fuel I calculate my mpg by miles driven and amount of fuel it took. Also once I fuel if I see my fuel gage dropping faster than normal i stop and drain the seperator again and it doesnt drop as fast any more. It could be in my head but this is my first cat and all my other cummins motors didnt do this when I would drain my seperator. Thanks

The reason I am asking is I am trying to justify buying a turbo 3000 fuel saver devise. So if you think I can get better fuel economy with a turbo 3000 I am going to get one but I havent found any one out here on the road yet that has actually purchased one to get there opinion on how it works. Thanks

Do some searches on here about the turbo 3000, there are a couple of long threads on here about it, and the general consensus is it's a waste of money.

We are talking about the fuel/water separator that's between the tanks and the fuel pump, right? That's an International part, not a Cat part. Being that it's before the fuel pump, it's also not under pressure, the fuel is sucked through it by the fuel pump. If you were getting air trapped in it A) it would float to the top of the separator and not come out of the drain before the fuel, and B) the fuel pump would lose its prime and the engine would quit until you bled the air back out of it. Fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate, especially in round tanks.

Just out of curiosity, is your separator the kind that's a metal cylinder with a lid on the top with the fuel lines going into it? If so, there's a permanent cleanable screen that's under the lid, you might want to take that thing out and clean it. My truck (98 model 9300) came with one of those, and after I had a fuel algae problem last year, I couldn't keep it clean, it was constantly getting plugged up. I took the thing apart, and saw that the whole canister was totally full of crud, and I decided just to take the whole thing off and replaced it with a replaceable spin-on filter/separator, and I've been very happy with that setup.

Turbo 3000d Vada is pure junk. A hollow tube with baffles in it. I used to have one and sold it to a guy who swore by it.

If you want to remove air from fuel, get the FASS. It might gain you maybe a 1/10th mpg, but where it helps is cleaner fuel with no air that saves on the injector wear and smoothes out the idle alot.

Had the FASS on my truck since 2003.

No I had the clear water fuel seperator on it and the glass had a crack in it so I replaced it with the old style cummins fuel filter system. I also had to replace the main fuel line coming from the filter to the fuel pump.

Crack the seal before you open drain and this won't happen. many filters have a new style drain valve so you won't have to do this. what filter mfg and part # are you useing ?

The Turbo 3000 is a pretty good paper weight....

    Turbo 3000 ???

There is someone in PA with a 50' iron bridge I bet they would sell you in a NY minute... LOL

Don't worry about the air, your fuel wouldn't drain if it didn't do that.
