Hello all , I first want to say that I had the best of all worlds . I was running for G&D Intergrated formerly known as G&D Transportation.
I was running out of the Dunn,Nc /Portsmouth,Va Terminal.
let me say this this is not a Great Company but not one of the worst by far !
The main thing is that you are going to be in the ports running containers !!
Sometimes you can get in and get out in about 30 mins or be there for several hours . It all depends on the day and the way the containers are coming off the ship.
My situation was rare I lived enroute to the port so i was able to get home during the week as well as be home for the weekend .
The main problem that i had with the company is that the dispatchers are just not human !! they expect way to much out of a driver and expect you to do things that are just not SAFE!!
I after three years and 9 months had finaly stood up to my dispatcher and the head dispatcher and told them that my truckcould not make a trip back into the Mountains due to safety issues . i then was told to run the load or clean it out and pack my bags !!
Now let me share a lil bit about myself i have recived the safe driver award from G&D for the past two years . i have been a driver trainer for G&D and as well for other companies that I have worked for in the past .
The main issue I have with G&D is that the Dispatchers stink !!!! The Shop guys are a joke and that is for real!! But the Company for the most is a great company!!
How many Companies would pay you vaction pay if you broke down for 10 days due to a motor that blew up. then to boot they fly you home for your sons first baseball game ? Well G&D did and they didnt take any of my vaction time from me that I had earned .
Oh have I mentioned that You get to take your truck home if you live outside of the 50 mile radius of a terminal . Well the Virginia Drivers for the company all got to do this but the NC drivers had to take all the trucks to the main terminal.
Oh also the only means of Cumminaction to your dispatcher is with Nextel well nextel is not everywhere !! so you might end up with no phone service with in a area that you are delivering and or break down and you are S.O.L
I am in the process of starting a new Job come Monday Jan 14th for howell's motor freight which is a company that has been around for over 50yrs .
So with this all being said do not take this as a bad company for all trucking companies have the good the bad and the ugly!!
If I was to referr anyone to a great company for one to try after a yr or two on the road this would be them .
If you do some research they are in Ill,In,Ia,Sc,Ga and then NC
So everyone this is not a warning to stay clear Im just informing you of what to expect in some areas.
Take care all
