Hey everyone
I have a cat c-15 Acert 550 hp 18 speed with a gear ratio of 3.91.
from previous forums that I posted bought this truck it’s been amazing haven’t had any major issues yet. Now I don’t do any heavy hauling, and the terrain I drive in is all flat, my loads are light. I want to lower my RPMs when cruising. I want to swap out gears from 3.91 to 3.36 or lower. Now I never done this before and is it even possible and if so what parts and components do I have to change. What do you guys recommend. I am currently cruising at 66 mph 1540 rpm right now average 4.8 mpg according to my truck.

From what I recall, an acert liked to be ran lower rpms. What transmission do you have? I would think 3.36 would be much better. You say light loads, do you mean tandem van? Light loads to one guy could be heavy to another.
-
Yes Sir dry van under 30k, Eaton fuller 18 speed. I mean is it even possible to swap gears
-
Is your truck a tandem spec truck? 12 front, 40 rears? If so, drop 3.36 gear sets in. Have your ecm recalibrated for different gearing, and while doing that, have a file put in it for increased fuel mileage. Where are you located?
Vampire Thanks this. -
Is Mr. Haney still around? From what I remember, he worked magic on the Cats.

12,350 front 46,000 rear. I am located in Michigan

It won’t be cheap because you have heavy rear ends, and with the current cost of fuel it will take a long time to recover the cost of doing the swap. But basically you take the guts out of your pumpkins and put new guts in, same as if your rear end went out, only you’re doing it with a different ratio than you currently have.

What he said ^
46 rears will be costly to swap to 3.36. Then you also have the issue of an odd gear ratio in a heavy spec truck when the time comes to sell.
I know for just a 40 rear setup you’d probably be looking at 10g to swap. 46’s, probably closer to 15g. -
so basically only the rear differential
-
Lmao oh hell no, I can deal with the fuel if it cost that much.
-
Won’t know for sure till you price it out. Take your vin to the dealer or any shop and they can quote your gear sets and labor. All I know is I had to replace a 3.70 front gear set and power divider. Cost was $5000.
Adamali21 Thanks this.
