Hi. I have got a 1994 Peterbilt 379 that I have had for about 5 years. I recently had a rear end go out on me and am considering changing both rears to a different gear ratio. I use it mostly for short hauls (80-200mi) of 35-38 tons with lots of hills. I believe it has a 3406B mechanical in it and it is an 18 speed. My local mechanic that is working on it said it has 3.08 rear ends?? I knew it was high geared but have never even heard of 3.08's. What would be a good gear ratio for my situation? If I change both rear ends to say 3.55's would I need to change anything else? Thanks.

Had this same set up except I had 390's and a 15 speed..That was the best pulling truck I ever had.... You would need to reset your speedometer..Probably have to get a peterbilt parts man to give you the numbers to flip on the back of it... If it was me I would go 370's or 390's if there is alot of hills.. Don't think you will have to change drive lines or anything like that..
