Hey all. Came into a situation the the other day that I had to use my judgement to make a call on. It all worked out fine. But I'd like to hear from some experienced drivers (I've only been out here a year) on if they'd do the same.
I was in illinois 80 wb around the 146. Got the red light on the prepass to come in the scale. As I approached the ramp I saw it was completely full to where the tail of the last trucks trailer was almsost in the granny lane. So I looked at the shoulder for a spot to pull behind and they were doing construction of some sort right before the ramp on the shoulder. So I decided to pass by the scale instead of coming to a complete stop in the granny lane. There were 4 troopers at the scale house so needless to say I watched my tail for the red and blues for the next few miles. Lol
If you were in the same situation would you have passed by? I don't know if it's just me but it seems like common sense to me not to come to a stop on the highway.
Also. Take the same situation but take away the road construction on the shoulder. Would you stop on the shoulder to get in line? Or would you consider the ramp the only place to stop.
Also if a cop did come out and pull you over. Do you think they'd understand? Or is it hard to say and it's pretty much up to the trooper.
Given the same situation, experienced drivers, would you do the same?

If I can't stop safely out of the traffic lane, I go on by (I also have PrePass). Some states, such as Indiana, have signs posted that indicate a driver should go by if the ramp is full.
If a trooper wants to ticket me for making such a decision, I'd fight it. Frankly, I think they have better things to do. Just my pfennig's worth.sevenmph Thanks this. -
some states will, let you pass some will not, have been out of trucking long enough not to be able to tell you what states will and what states wont. lots of luck of almost forgot sometimes a sign is posted in some states.

The shoulders are for emergencies only.

If they are backed the whole way down the ramp . I am rollin by , and waving the hole time.....
Not to go off topic , but I got a red light on prepass once in nebraska , and the sign said to bypass. What the hell is with that? I by passed needless to say. -
Ha, your funny, if there is more than 5 trucks in line I pass by. I don't have the patience to wait in a line of 15-20 trucks(which is usually the case at Banning) to roll over the scale with less than 10,000lbs in the box. Sorry CHP.

You do what you think is best, at that time, given the knowledge you have.
Circumstances dictate procedure . Those are the words I have learned to live by.
From what you describe, i would have dropped a gear and kept rolling.48Packard Thanks this. -
i have this happen in Wisconsin all the time. I usually just pull in. Because they can prove you have a red light. But you can't prove it said closed. I've always gotten the go around and not have to go over the scale once I pulled in.
