I agree with Haney I had a 48" with em on and got rid of them. However I think a 36 with an enclosed rack is going to look misproportioned. My 2 cents

I would just like to replace the cab on the truck I have. That's what really wears out.
-
Geez...my Pete barely has any squeaks or rattles.... but it's a low mileage truck...

Everyone thinking of a glider should read this thread and follow one fleet owner's experience with 5 new trucks. Wow. Any questions concerning the economics of gliders should be put to rest when you see what people are going through with these new technological un-wonders. And the question that keeps coming to mind is what will the used truck market look like in 4 or 5 years? -
THAT is the problem! Look at all the problems the new EPA wonder trucks are having now, cant imagine what they'll be like with 500,000+ on them! Plus, how long till the EPA and the wiz kids in government realize the glider markets growth and kill it off ?

Did I not say that it was Invoice price? Of course, I would not be paying that. That is called negotiation. And I never said I was going thru with it. I mentioned that I was only talking to the dealer. He wants me to do it more than I do.
Invoices are easy on this one. The Detroit would be a factory rebuilt. The Eaton tranny would be a factory rebuilt. The rears would be new OEM. And the rest of the truck would be new freightliner. All put together by a Freightliner dealer complete with Freightliner OEM warranties.
If I had something like this custom done, worrying about selling would be last in priority. And the nice thing living in ag country, there is always a farm operation that is looking for a good, used flat or mid roof truck. One of the reasons I wouldn't even consider a condo under any circumstance. -
I got lucky with mine. I have an '06 ISX that the EGR valve died in the CLOSED position. I had a block in the intake to stop the EGR stuff from getting thru, but about a year ago, the valve died. It is locked in the closed position. Even though I have been talking with a dealer about a glider, it is harder to justify since I have the situation I do with the ISX. Have no intention of replacing the EGR valve, and the engine runs fine still at 805,000 miles. The truck is ok, so it is also tempting to just rebuild this engine, without doing anything about the EGR valve, when it comes time to consider it.
You have to know that the government will not let this glider thing go on forever. Sooner or later, somebody at the EPA will catch on and find a way to regulate gliders out of existence.
Until then...... -
When gliders are banned, then we will see re-manufactured, or re-built. Just like the military has done.
-
You know, you are probably right about that. Whenever the government comes up with some restriction, then there is always someone who will find a way to go around it.
Of course, that is assuming that the Feds don't do the CARB thing and ban certain trucks unless they have been retrofitted with DPF's and such. At that point, it may be more cost effective to just get the newer truck. Some of those retrofits, I have heard, are pretty pricey and are more prone to problems than factory done trucks. -
Just talked to a guy I know and he was telling me that a few of the guys buying gliders from Hoover was having motor and wiring issues.....
DL I just put that out there so you would know.
