I am going to put the dreaded DPF on my old 2000 Freightliner Classic. Its a Detroit 12.7. Has anyone done this and what was the outcome? I plan on putting it in place of one of my vertical stack mufflers. Any thoughts on this location.?? I also wonder if I can use water/methanol injection with a DPF?

There were some posts on this forum about 3-4 month ago. But more complaining about the limited time you can use them. Those retrofits will expire any time soon and you can't run legally in Cali anymore.
Save that money and gather further info.MrTrans, Dominick253 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I can run until 2021 and some can go to 2023. The word is CARB will allow extensions when they start to expire. There is no more grace period. They are serious about enforcing this now. My engine is Pre EGR and is extremely reliable. I don't want to get a truck that is in the shop half the time, so I am keeping mine. It is the lessor of 2 evils. I am curious if the slight increase in back pressure is noticeable.Terry270 Thanks this.

How much is the retrofit going to cost you?
Dominick253 Thanks this. -
I see you're aware of the deadline. I was just searching in the shop section of this forum to find the posts.
I don't know what would be better, spending money on retrofit or going towards newer truck.
I have a 2006 myself but I don't have to do Cali. I wouldn't spend that money either, even if they'd force me. I'd rather leave.
Tough call in your situation. Good luck.Dominick253 and Pork Chop Express Thank this. -
My equipment is paid for, so I can justify the cost of the DPF. Around $15K. I live in Temecula and the best money I make is hauling out of this area. Coming back is a challenge. But I have figured out a way to get a decent rate returning home. So the DPF doesn't really cost anything, because the higher rates I get by running out from here will more than cover the cost.gokiddogo Thanks this.

If it functions fine for a few more years I'd say you would be ahead. 15k to keep carb off your rear would be the way I'd probably go too if I was in your shoes. I know diesel Dave I think it was put one on his pre emissions cat and it's working fine. Haven't heard any reports about old Detroits yet though. Keep us informed
areelius Thanks this. -
@Diesel Dave maybe can chime in

@areelius, where are you seeing enforcement? What is your typical lane?
I haven't seen any CARB enforcement.Straight Stacks Thanks this. -
You won't see them until its too late. It only takes once and you lose your truck to impound. The fines are very high. They like the Banning scale and of course the new one when it opens at the NV border. They also do spot set up checks. The odds may not be high of getting caught, but they will catch you if you run here enough. I go through Banning all the time so no more worrying for me once I put on the DPF.Dominick253 and alien4fish Thank this.
