So i know this is going to be very dependent on air temperature but how long does it take before you see coolant temperature on your gauge when idling? Im just trying to figure out if the thermostat on the engine I have is stuck open as i will have oil temp showing on the gauge but nothing on the engine coolant gauge [ i know the gauge works because it will move eventually] and i do get heat from the heater.....

I don't have another truck to compare it to so i cant tell easily and i know diesels don't produce really good heat at idle.......i'm sure it wouldn't hurt to change the stat anyways but if i dont have too.....lol.

Just feel the upper rad hose. If it gradually warms up, its likely the t-stat is stuck. If it stays cold, then suddenly warms up the t-stats are probably fine.

Mine will stay low, if it’s cold enough and winds blowing hard enough. Brand new thermostats. Fast idle, or Driving, it will come up. The difference seems to be below freezing, and especially depends on the wind hitting the radiator. I once had to put cardboard in front of a new Company Truck to get heat. It was -57 wind chill though.

@6cuda6, does your Volvo have the display screen between the speedo and RPM? You can toggle through the guages with the button on the lever right of steering wheel and see a digital coolant temp. My dash guage never matches the digital guage. I use both to kind of get an average when I'm warming up or pulling a hard hill.

doesn't it depend on what truck Goofy is driving?

For my truck, the coolant temperature stays about 20F above the oil temperature. The lowest reading of the coolant gauge is 130F. It usually takes 15 minutes in warm weather or 30 minutes in freezing weather to reach 160F oil temperature.

How long does it take till you heater starts blowing warm with the heater set on fill hot, if it does not get hot in just a few min. the t/stat is not working? I had a truck that you had to drive 10 mi. till it got any heat going put new ones in and it was blowing hot before I got around the truck ck. every thing on a cold morning.

The older engines like my Big Cam III take a loooong time to make the needle move when cold outside. The newer engines are designed to run cleaner hotter and tend to warm up quite quickly. Always best to run a high idle when parked. What engine do you have?
