1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I finished school on Nov 6th and started looking. Only one company called me back (I had a few issues in my past, which lawyers are even now working to remove for good). So the company was Swift. Before you tell me all the jokes, and how bad it is to work for them think about a couple of things.

First, they called back, so any honest job is better than no job at all right? Second, everyone has to start someplace. You that work for these great companies had to start someplace, right? And third, if you had a large group of drivers with limited experience, don't you think it would be a good idea to limit the speed of the vehicles, just in case?

Anyway, I start orientation next week in Lancaster, TX (only about 35 miles from my house)

Congrats to you,Cageym!!And, one of my bestest friends and her hubby work for Swift, and they are very happy....so try to just ignore all the jokes and derisive comments.
If it works for YOU, everyone elses comments and opinions truly don't matter.

Bottom line is, take the good, and forget the bad, right?

You asked the questions you'll get the answers .
No , any job is not better than no job and many here found that out . While you are away from home 3 or 4 weeks at a time making $400 a week or less you are prevented from looking for a decent job .
Swift called you but you aren't hired yet . I wish you luck but those issues may get you yet .
Yes , we all started somewhere but many of us never have and never will work for bottom feeder megacarriers .
No , I don't think it would be a good idea to limit speed of vehicles . All studies done regarding speed limiters concluded speed limiters increase the risk of accident . Anyone not capable of driving a truck down the highway at normal speed is no doubt incapable of safely driving under other conditions and shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel .

Well, I know FFE,Dart and CFI have facilities in Lancaster, but Swift too? Wonder if Swift took over Dart or CFI yard? Haven't been there in a few years.

That's pretty good. You start looking at the beginning of Nov and start with Swift next week. Lucky you. I also started looking at the beginning of Nov. So far, I do have an approval from Swift, but I don't start until either the first or third week of January (2010). Who's butt did you have to kiss to start next week?

And don't pay no mind to Rick G. I have never seen him post anything at all remotely positive anywhere on this board. Granted things are tough throughout this industry as well as many others and perhaps this isn't the best time to get into it. ANd so what if some of these companies are not the best there is. There are still drivers who are happy working for these very same companies. Must not be all bad.

This is just flat out wrong. Rick G is actually one of the few long term veterans on here that will try to help out new drivers looking for answers. He may not always tell you what you want to hear, but he will tell you the truth. I have seen him post plenty of positive things about companies and he has posted a lot of supportive messages to drivers. He's no troll, that's for sure.

I don't have a dog in the fight as he and I usually don't post on the same topics, but when I read his posts, I find them to be consistently informative and helpful. I only have 9 years behind the wheel and 15 years in the industry, and I usually agree with his take on things. His post on this thread is absolutely spot on, BTW.

So the OP should 'pay some mind' to Rick G. If you were smart, you would too.

O.K. You explain why all the companies that are reducing their fleets keep going to schools to recruit . They keep going to recruit because unhappy drivers keep quitting . Can you give a different answer ?
You have an approval from Swift . So did the thousands of drivers that went to Swift training then had their CDL's revoked . They are not among the happy drivers working for that company .
