3 yr experience Class A Hazmat with Twic. Been driving for a local oil company, class B truck but have 1 yr experience OTR with a car hauler. There’s been a few offers to go work for a union company which after a few years I’d be making maybe 5-$8 more per hour then I am now. Currently making $40/hr with about 20hrs OT a week. For some reason I feel like I can make a lot more with my credentials. Don’t have any benefits currently which I’d get with the union and I’m 39 years old. Not looking to go OTR again and currently living north of Boston. Am I doing alright for myself or should I continue to look elsewhere. Does anyone know higher paying companies where I can take my license and credentials? Seems the wage in this field is about $33-$35/hr. I have yr round work where most is seasonal up here. Should I stay or should I pursue somewhere else. Any suggestions or guidance on what to do is greatly appreciated. Just trying to give my family a life I never had. TIA
Guidance needed!

If the union job is the kind of work you want to do then that’s where I’d be headed. I use to live in Quincy and worked out of Canton. Was Teamsters local 379, hauled steel pipe all over New England. This was back in the early-mid 80’s $9.85 per hour, lol. Benefits were incredible back then, Teamsters health and welfare insurance didn’t cost anything and was incredible.
Then Local 25 for awhile..
Now you got me missing the NE..people are different up there..Florida seems like it’s mostly pansies, hahaBig Road Skateboard and 201 Thank this. -
Okay,, let me get this straight, if my math is correct,, you are making $1600 bucks PLUS another $800 in OT if straight time, $1200 if time and a half, and you can't make it? And no insurance? With a family?
What the heck kind of place offers $40/hr. and no benefits? Tell the family too bad, you didn't live such a bad life with half a loaf of bread. I was behind a guy at Walmart the other day, the young man had a cart full, the lackwit cashier dumbingly said, "okay,,that will be $520.74,,
, I looked at the guy, he said, I have a family,,,you people are nuts,,
hope not dumb twucker and drvrtech77 Thank this. -
Surely you didn’t mean to put "the" in front of NE, and you really miss Nebraska?
I'm with you on the pansies in FL thoughLast edited: Nov 19, 2025 at 10:15 AM
