When I was getting my fingerprints done I was told to wait to take the hazmat test tell I am issued my Class A CDL cause my current Class B CDL expires next December and when I get issued my Class A that It will expire in 4 years and if I get it now I would have to do the process all over again next year.

I was looking at early renewal but in ND it has to be within 10 months from your expiration date so that's out the question.

So should I just wait it out (which I'm thinking is best)? Has anybody else been told this as well when they was getting there Hazmat endorsement?

Maybe I’m a little confused, but...

If you’re getting your class A, that replaces your class B and the endorsement is tied in with the new license. The endorsement expires with the license four years away, not one. Unless your state rules are different, you take the HM written test on the day you renew, otherwise if you do it after, it’s just an extra trip to the DMV you didn’t need to take, plus any additional costs for having to reissue the license with the endorsement added.

Your tsa fingerprint certification is good for five years.
You can get your hazmat endorsement now and add it to your B. When you up grade to your A you'll just need to retake the written DMV hazmat test again with all the other written tests.

I got my class A lic last June/2017. I got my hazmat endorsement at same time. I got a letter saying I needed to get fingerprints done again because my lic had to be renewed. I called up and they told me same thing which made no sense for finger printing again. I understand taking hazmat test again but finger printing again makes no sense to me.

    You confuse me.

Lets set all that aside. mostly noise. (No offense please)

When you RENEW any license PRIOR to expiring date, YOU ARE stamped whatever endorsements etc to the new license etc. You are given a NEW expiry date years from now. CDL's in my state I think now has a 8 year expiry. I'll have to check.

If you OWN a Hazmat on the old class B it will stamp onto the new renewed license. JUST a written Hazmat test is given to you along with the other general knowledge, tanker, air brake written tests and so on etc etc etc. You are already part of the Hazmat.

    NOW.

If you NEVER held a hazmat before, you have to be fingerprinted, interviewed by TSA/Homeland Security to be assessed as a threat to the Nation or not in about 50 days after, a decision is rendered and you will either be allowed to proceed with your hazmat or be denied it.

I held hazmat for years until before 9-11. If I was to go back and try to get it again, I will have to do everything all over again just like a NEWBIE who has never ever held a Class A or B.

Things have changed since 9-11 and frankly part of it is good for America, but its losing so many good people who otherwise can drive for a variety of reasons.

My last CDL A renewal was tanker, airbrake, general knowledge and so on in written form. A picture was taken and everything transferred to the new CDL. I was grandfathered under Tier Two and also under Arkansas Grandfathered laws as a veteran trucker. So all I had to do is get a new license with the new expiry date, sign a Tier two form saying I don't hold a Medical card and I do not engage in Commerce interstate or intrastate. And that is that. Thank you bye bye. (Oh and 60 dollars please....) done.

so I went to the DMV and was told it don't matter if I take with my Class B or wait tell I get my Class A I would still have to renew my CDL and Hazmat endorsement next year cause that is when my license expires and upgrading to a Class A wont give me 4 years. so ima just study for it and take it before I start my class.

So if they are scooping up renewals and interviewing them, that's a pretty wide net if you ask me.

I think the fingerprints are good for 5 years but the endorsement is only for 3 years or something strange like that.

I only had a auto licence last year. I went to a school and then got my class A license in June 2017. I had to take general , airbrake and one other test before I took my road test. I also took the tanker and hazmat test before my road test. I had to get finger printed and wait for them to say I was ok for hazmat. When I past my road test and got my Class A they gave me an new lic with my endorsements but the experation date was the same as when my auto license was up. So now a year and a couple of months later my cdl lic is about to expire and I had to go get finger printed again for hazmat and have to take the hazmat test again when I renue it. It doesnt make sense to me but I called and thats what I had to do

Wow.....It ain’t like that in Texas.....My hazmat endorsement has a separate expiration date apart from my CDL....5 yrs on the hazmat. If I renew the CDL before the hazmat expires, the hazmat continues until it’s expiration date......sometimes they make me take the hazmat written, but then sometimes they don’t and just let me renew without the written. “Next”......
