Yeah, doubled checked with an equipment account and 3/8 will work fine. Another driver insisted I needed 1/2. Will likely upgrade half my chains to 3/8. My binders will still work with them.

I talked to the guys at US cargo control a while back. They said it was ok to come pick up orders in person. That would save a small fortune in shipping charges.
They are near Iowa city if I remember right. -

I had 1/2 inch chains for track vehicles, scrapers, etc. but never had any use for them besides very heavy or large wheeled loads.
Even the scale masters asked why such large chains, well I got them for free. -

Thanks for all the responses. I have been on the phone with the people I am buying the trailer from to get the rating on the securement points and then with my one account that said they "required" the larger chains.
The equipment is less than 20k #'s and with 5/16 I will be over 80% of load capacity on securement. Finally talked to my contact and he said others had no clue what they are talking about. For insurance purposes they will not tell me how to secure. They do have recommendations and 5/16 is fine.
However I do think I will get some shorter chains for these loads. Will only need 6' lengths so will cut down a couple of my 20' chains.
SHC, maybe I could put an order together and you could throw it on the back of your back and bring it down. -

I ran 10 20 foot chains on the truck, if you need shorter chains just use one end on each side for securing. I found that cutting chains shorter could be bad if you had more than one piece needing chained down, just a suggestion since a 20 foot chain secured to both sides of most loads like trucks or equipment will still give you enough to run the open across the trailer.
Just a thought -
I wouldn't cut them either. Even if you have dedicated loads for the trailer. You know very well in this business versatility rules
