I have a kw with ultrashift 3-gen truck runs well but once in a while it will not shift the gears it will just flash them, I took it the the kenworth dealer in Fontana ca they charge me $1400 and told me that it had some in active codes and that was the problem. a month later I had the same problem took it to another shop they told me it was giving them code 37 they changed 4 batteries and the alternator and check all the sensors and told me that was the problem another $1700 spent. today I had the same problem again I checked for codes and it reads 17 and 37 inactive. has any one had this problem??

The is a PDF file with manual for that, but I'd look online for an operators manual, as that thing is huge and I have a good connection. The publication for that is TRDR-940.
There are some tests you are supposed to run and when(if)that fails you are to take it to the dealer. I'd add to make sure the air is dry by checking the tanks.
Now, from my experience running an older one, when it hangs, you get it somewhere where you can turn the key off for a few minutes, and let the clutch readjust, and that usually fixed it. If I did a lot of city stop and go, I'd shut it off every half hour or so for the same reason, you pick the spots then instead of having it block traffic.
The transmission control module and the engine control module must work together correctly to minimize this, and I have no experience driving a Paccar product with that trans, so all I can tell you is that from talking to those driving one, you are not alone.Last edited: May 16, 2015

17 and 37 are power related. The first thing to check for any electronic components is clean power and grounds. The transmission TCU will have it's own separate power supply harness from the batteries, or main power junction. You will need to locate this harness and check it inch by inch to make sure it hasn't rubbed through anywhere and corroded. There is also a 30 amp fuse somewhere along this harness and usually a few main connections. Take all these apart and make sure the pins are in good shape and tight.

The $3100 you spent at the Stealership would have been better invested in converting your truck into a Manual and you still would've had money left over.
Autotragic transmissions and Trucks do not mix well. -
Thanks for the input i will check that out.

like HEAVYD said.... some of them have 2 power leads coming from the batts (mine does)..... 1 to power the tcm and 1 to power the shifting.... my truck would start (tcm was getting power) but wouldn't go into gear... wire 2 was broken.....
also may be the X Y shifter going bad ($1,800 fix)
when mine went out I have all kinds of codes.... dealer said they needed to replace X Y shifter, LCM AND wiring harness.... I told them "your telling me that everything that makes the truck shift ALL went bad at the same time..?"... I had them change the X Y shifter only... that was 3 years ago and it running just fine
with 774K on it if it hasn't been changed your do
btw IF they tell you they need to drop the trans to change it they are full of ####... it's a 2hr job in the truck and 8-10 hr's if they drop the trans to do it
BTW you can go to ANY dealer to have it worked on... volvo, pate, kw...... they can all work on that transljmenez1 Thanks this. -
Oh, I very much doubt $3100 would cover it.
