Man is fatally shot in semi at 60th and L Streets; police release photos of suspect's vehicle

Omaha police on Tuesday released photos of an extended cab pickup truck they say was involved in a homicide Monday afternoon at 60th and L Streets.
James E. Womack, 32, who was driving a semitrailer truck, was shot to death, police said. The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m.
The photos released by police show a late 1990s or early 2000s Chevy Silverado extended cab pickup truck. The color appears to be tan, beige or pewter, and it may have damage in front of the rear, driver's-side wheel.
Craig Kellerman told KMTV that he was driving by the intersection and saw what happened.
He said a man got out of the semi and walked up to a beige pickup to pound on the windows. The man yelled, "What's your problem?"
"(He) said his piece and started walking back to his truck, and as soon as he turned around, from what I could tell, he got shot in the back three times," Kellerman said. "He just kind of collapsed and rolled over. I was just scared for him."
The semi Womack was in had "Hill Bros.” emblazoned on the back of the trailer.
A Hill Brothers Transportation Inc. facility is about a mile and a half west of the intersection. A person who answered the phone Tuesday morning at Hill Brothers said the company would have no comment yet.
Womack was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy with CPR in progress. He died at the hospital.
Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the shooter.
“Help and input from the public is essential to getting all the facts and information,” Omaha Police Lt. Kyle Steffen said Monday.
A Metro bus with a camera on board may have video of the shooting, Steffen said.
In addition to the semi, a large commercial truck and a handful of smaller vehicles remained parked at the intersection as police investigated. At least three women, whom police described as witnesses, sat on the concrete median on the west side of the intersection.
Reached by phone Monday night, a woman who identified herself as Womack’s mother-in-law said he had served three tours in Iraq and that he and his wife had raised three children.
Late Monday evening word of Womack’s death shook friends around 40th and Q Streets in South Omaha, where some of his neighbors stood in a front yard to commiserate.
Jeremiah Jones, 37, who lives next door to the Womacks, said Womack “would do anything for anybody.”
“He would joke around and play around. He would help you if you needed help,” Jones said. “He didn’t deserve to get shot. He didn’t ever cause trouble like that.”
Jones happened to drive past the shooting earlier in the day and witnessed emergency personnel administering CPR to Womack, but did not realize it was his neighbor until seeing reports on the news.
Neighbors said Womack was the father of two daughters and a son. The birthday of one of his daughters was Monday.
Jones’ mother, Sue, said Womack “was the best neighbor we ever had.”
“I would say he was the best friend you could have. He was always watching your back. We all loved him to death because he was so sweet. He made sure his family was well taken care of.” -

Seems like shooting gallery days of the early 90s are coming back in Omaha and its not just in the bad areas anymore .
Bud A. Thanks this. -
No kidding friend of mine told me about this today. It's like I told him it's a case of an illegal gun or some moron who should have never been issued a carry permit because in the wonderful city of Omaha, one cannot carry a firearm LEGALLY unless you have a CCW or an open carry permit.
Sad situation and who the hell shoots somebody in the back? Clean cut case of cold blooded murder. Dont bother with a trial morning after he's caught string him up in front of the court house or put a 22 behind his ear and squeeze the trigger.
Murder rate would be cut in half in this god #### country if we got rid of death row and went back to stringing them up in front of the court house, or like I said a 22 behind the ear and leave them lay there a few days for everybody to see. No more death row for 30 years you got till 8 am the next morning to say your goodbyes.
Hope they catch the guy who did this quickly and hope they bring down the full weight of the law on him.Joetro, DriverMike1984, StrokerTSi and 4 others Thank this. -
Well Nebraska did reinstate their death penalty last year .
Omaha has always had its share of gun violence and it got really bad in the early 90s until they clamped down on the gangs .
Seems to be back tho .379exhd Thanks this. -
