There are thousands of expedite drivers working as independent operators for fleet owners . The drivers have complete control of the truck , decide which loads they'll take , and when they take time off . They also buy the fuel . The owner gets 40% of the gross .

Those are the Fed EX guys and such.
I still do not know how they beat the rules. Except for the fact they have complete control and can choose loads and time off.
In reality, it is very hard to believe they actually have that ability. -
Look at the way FedEx Ground got around the rules . All they did was eliminate single route contracts and require contractors to have multiple routes . The loads are still assigned by FedEx and contractors still have to wear uniforms .

the reason for hiring as a contractor so I dont have to pay workers comp.
If I only have one employee besides myself do I even need to pay workers compensation? -

I thought it was just for the drivers that's good to know I will have workman's comp
For employee taxes there is
1. Federal Income Tax and Social Security and Medicare Taxes (W4)
2.Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax
Are there any others? -
When I said it was for you, it was to protect you in case they were injured on the job and went after you with an attorney. You can include yourself in most states.
When you have employees, you must comply with the hiring of them by the FMCSA rules.
In addition:
I-9 to comply with immigration laws
W-4 for federal withholding
St W-4 for state withholding
You will also need to have a federal ID number as well.
At this point, you would be best to engage a person who is familiar with employment rules and payroll as well.Stroked F550 Thanks this. -

As a business owner (though, I admit, not in the trucking industry) I found it worth EVERY LAST PENNY to hire a HR company (also known as a PEO - Professional Employer Organization). They dot all the ts and make sure every i is crossed.Stroked F550 Thanks this.
