Here is the deal...my hubby got CDL without going to school and has worked (technically is still working for) since July of this year for the same small company. The last time he went out was the week before Thanksgiving. He got his check from his "trainer" and the guy said he would call him about the next run but he never called. Hubby finally got ahold of him the night before they normally would start their run and "trainer" said ....man don't you know? This is between you and "office mgr" all I know is you aren't riding with me so you need to come get your things off the truck by 11pm because you are not riding with me. Hubby called office next morning and they laughed and said they didn't know why the guys don't just want to say I don't want to ride with you but that this was the case and right now the company has no more trainers available right now.
Hubby puts in lots of apps and goes with Schneiders and makes it thru last day of experienced driver orientation and does not pass the road test. They said he was not experienced enough. I told him to ask about not being hired if it affected his DAC and they said it would not because he never hired.
He has a pre hire from USA Trucking with orientation in Little Rock, AR on the 3rd of January, 2011 and he has apps still in with FFE, Maverick, and also many other companies. Some have told him they won't hire because he didn't go to truck school and the others we haven't heard back from but they may still be checking his past employment, driving, criminal history etc.
With Lowe's he has made it thru three interviews and a pre employment drug test.
finally my question? what do ya'll know about Lowes and where to go from here if that doesn't work out? Do we keep trying to get prehires?

uh......no.......on an item or two
there is NO decent money at Lowe's
the benefits stink
but yeah, he'd be sleeping in his own bed.
lowe's wants experienced drivers.
lowes will pay (about $12.00) per hour to start
if there isn't enough or any deliveries to make, he's going home, or working in the store, for the wages the store employees get, NOT the drivers.....so about $8.00per hour......
he will not make a decent weekly pay, the benefits cost more than they are worth...

$12 an hour.....so 20 cents a mile is better.?
Lowes has better bennies than almost every OTR company.

uh....no...the benefits at lowes stink......(up here) at least, they were NOT blue cross.....some insurance company.
and yeah .20¢ IS BETTER when you consider a driver will NOT be working 40 hours at lowes each week....there is virtually NO overtime either. if you go past 40 hours per week, the management yells at you. then the following week, they short you on hours........

If he can get on at Lowe's, it might be a good idea. Regardless of what others tell you about a company, particularly these retail outfits, what may not be a good fit for one, might be just the perfect fit for someone else.
It sounds to me like he NEEDS a job, and if Lowe's will hire him, then he will at least have one. It is real easy to put down a company, or a person for working for that company, if you are all set up with your own job. But if you need something to pay the bills, this just might be the thing.
I have never worked for Lowe's, so I'm not trying to push him either direction. I just think that if he is having trouble getting hired, and they will hire him, that might be something he should consider. -
I guess it depends on the area. I have no exerience with Lowes but I do know this. It's better to work for a company that does not make their money from the truck. Lowes is hauling their own product so the chances of going under are less than a comapny that has to scramble for loads every day.
Is that $12 for all time spent on the truck. Because if it is you'll add up more than most milage pay. When you get paid by the mile you get nothing if the truck is not moving. Just add the numbers. At a job like this you will get a $120 a day for 10 hours not counting any OT. An OTR job starting at 27¢ a mile is going to pay you $135 a day if you drive 500 miles a day. Now what's the chances of driving 500 miles a day every day? It's the W-2 at the end of the year that tells it all. So when looking for work look at the job in depth. Just don't go by what someone tells you. Do your homework and come out with some good analytical answers.zigstar Thanks this. -
I got hired at Lowe's as a delivery driver in 2008. The only reason I got hired was because of my CDL. I started at around $12/hr and this was in the north east quarter of Ohio. You don't need a CDL to drive Lowe's box trucks, just their flatbeds.
I'm still employed by them, though I work in a different department now. I still run their flatbed frequently, though. In fact, my 8 hours flew by today because I drove around the county doing a few deliveries.
This is a particularly interesting thread to me because while you're considering getting into Lowe's, specifically in the delivery department, I'm getting ready to get out. I'm "pre-hired" with Roehl, and may very well be going with them in the next month or two.
One thing I enjoyed when I started working there in deliveries was the fact that; when deliveries were done, I was too! Sometimes that meant a 4 hour day, other times it was 10-12 hours. As a part timer I averaged about 30 hours a week my first year and a half. After a while, when I started getting some bills built up, I started looking for more steady hours. On very short delivery days, I would work in receiving, or out on the floor moving stock or whatever.
Lowe's delivers anything they sell. Appliances is a big one. They don't just deliver them, either. They install. One thing that sucks about that job (to me, anyway) is having to completely dissect a 28 cubic foot side by side refrigerator in the back of the truck on a freezing day, then have to also take the doors off someone's house just to get the thing in there, then put it back together... and hope it works. There are also some nasty, nasty... nasty houses. "Emergency deliveries"... Huh? This guy ABSOLUTELY needs this dishwasher!? Now?! At 6:00pm? When I've been here since 7am and I was about to leave? Ugh...
My benefits are ok. Blue Cross / Blue Shield, 401k, 2 weeks paid vacation, etc... Annual raises seem to diminish a bit each year. I'm not a ton better off now than I was when I was hired.
It's not all bad, but I got tired of the delivery job, and moved into sales. Oops... I hate retail, what was I thinking? Now I'm getting ready to change careers, and make a serious attempt at OTR driving. Lowe's as a company is solid, and a good place to work. I am fortunate to work at a store with good management and I get along with all the people I work with. I just don't like my job anymore, and I'd sooner go OTR than back to hauling 300lb washing machines up and down staircases all day.
