Most expediters are self employed contractors . They are either O/O's or contracted to fleet owners . The usual split is 60/40 . The driver gets 60% of the gross but buys the fuel . The rates are very good but the thing is to not take loads to areas where you aren't likely to get good freight back out .
Some people like to get started in cargo vans` because cargo vans are under 10,000 lbs. gvwr and not regulated by FMCSR . That means you can drive all you want and take breaks the way you want . The problem is too many people have cargo vans so they sit more .
If anyone contacts a FedEX Custom Critical recruiter she will send last year's trucks showing average mileage , income , availability , etc. on each class of truck . -
I have an associate that drives for Taylor made, here in Milwaukee
He is home almost every night
Takes runs mostly to Chicago
He is a OO and makes in the $50's, 1/2 ton van
But says he a lucky one, being at It for 10 years he has seen the company grow so he gets good dispatch -
When an O/O says what he makes I ask what their reported net income to the IRS the previous year was . Then I hear all about what a great accountant they have .
-
Thats very true LOL
A couple other guys I know
I haven't been told their pay
But being both drive cargo vans that get between 18 and 22 miles per gallon
They claim to gross a little over 100 grand a year -
When I inquired with FedEx CC, the recruiter told me the TT guys are doing under 90,000 miles per year. That's alot of sitting time, and they want you to be out 3 weeks at a time. So I took a pass on it. However, they have awesome rates and FSC, so I guess it just comes down to what you want.

I wouldn't doubt the $100,000 gross but it would be the exception . Cargo van rates start under a dollar a mile . Running over 2,000 miles a week would be a lot to expect with a cargo van simply because there's so many of them for the available work . Recruiters say cargo van owners should net between $35,000 to $50,000 a year . (and report $15,000 to $20,000 to the IRS with a good accountant ??? ) . You have to wonder if that net is after all expenses .

That's true but like you said , the rates are great . You'd probably gross more than you'd make getting 130,000 miles a year OTR . Would 3 weeks out be hard to take if you spent a full week home each month ? Industry average is 75% availability and many do just that . They just run 3 weeks out of the month or run more during the year and don't work from Thanksgiving to Christmas when freight is seasonably slow anyway .
