just wondering, if you work for a good company(otr), that you like, and you find a nother job, we'll say its local, and you dont want to burn any bridges, how many weeks notice would you give your otr company that you will be leaving?

Two weeks is usually a good idea. Just so you explain things to them, you should have no problem.
-
I have given 2 weeks notice to all companies except for the last one. I would not run illegal.
-
two weeks is good just hope they don't tell you to clean your truck out right then and there. It's funny that we as employees have to give notice but the company can ignore it and basically can you on the spot.
Baack, Roadmedic, luvtheroad and 1 other person Thank this. -
Hopefully this will help:
If at ANY point, you signed a paper with your company that states, "The company or you reserve the right to end employment at ANY time..."
DO NOT, I repeat... DO NOT give them a 2 weeks notice, or even give them a hint you intend to quit. Just get to a terminal, hand in the keys and complete paperwork.
On the other hand, if you work for a smaller company or O/O or someone you deem to have scuples, then give them notice(usually at least two weeks but offer to stay until they have someone to fill your truck) Try to leave on good terms. -
Try to find out what happened when previous drivers gave notice . If you have had a respectful relationship with the employer they may treat you decently during your notice thinking you may return later . I have some companies let good drivers work out their notice with no problems but the same company would give poor employees little or no work or the worst loads the last 2 weeks .

the custom is two weeks or at least one week if two would jepordize you getting the other job. Lilbit is right, explaining is a good thing to do. You never want to burn your bridges
-
Give them the same notice they would give to you.

heck people, im not leaving my compay!!!
they are to good, i was just curious, cause i was a t/s when someone called their emplyer to give the 2 weeks, and he was told to get outa the truck on the spot.. but i gotta thinking if i WERE to leave, which i dont intend on doing so, how time would be good, do i think my company would make someone hop outa the truck right on the spot?
do i think they could do that?
but it made me think, if i did find a job, how would be the best way of going about it...
just got me thinking,
i agree with what EVERYONE has said, dont tell till ur at a term, and i agree that 2 weeks would be good, specially if you dont wanna burn any bridges with them. -
I would give them 2 wks. I don't have to worry about getting put out of my truck because I own it.
