If you want to let me know I am clear after passing you at night, quickly turn your headlights on and off. Older drivers who are doing this now ,shame on you....you're doing it just to aggravate. HEY! and once in a-while when one of ya'll are lucky enuff to pass me,a little THANK-YOU flash would be cool when i signal you clear. Happy Trails and be safe out there.
I dont need a BRIGHT-LIGHT flash.

Okay, what about in the daytime?
-
I think the flashing to tell me I am OK to change lanes again is courteous. Lets not kill the remains of the old school trucking... its dying out on its own without us extinguishing it deliberately.

we truckers have a hard enough time dealing with 4 wheelers who are stupid and don't let us over, now a lot of the new drivers have no clue on the curtisees of the road. there should be a mandatory test for your class a cdl, Old school trucking and its curtisees.

At night time, no old school trucker would've EVER flashed his brights to the driver passing him. A simple on-off-on of the headlight switch is more than sufficient. Granted, some of today's trucks have daytime running lights and therefore cannot turn off their headlights. If you are driving one of those, PLEASE do not flash your brights at night as a method of letting someone know they're clear. All I need is to see two headlights in my passenger side mirror to know I'm clear, and if you hit your high beams while I'm looking at that mirror you're gonna get a dose of my flood lights mounted on the side of my truck.

Way back when (I'm NOT telling...LOL), I remember 4-wheeler drivers in Germany (and I believe other European countries) would flash their lights before passing a vehicle. Was courtesy over there and back then (?). But agree, it's a cardinal sin in the trucking world to flash truckers back over 'at night!' Rather have 'nothing' than those bright lites hit my already tired eyes...

When it was in Germany, way back when, you flashed your high lights at cars in front of you in the fast lane if you are approaching them faster than they are driving. The autobahns had no speed limits, the vehicles did. I remember riding with a friend in his trans-am doing 120 mph and somebody flashed behind us and we moved over. This little sports car went by like we were standing still.
Now here, in the good ol' USA, I toggle my lights off to let a driver know to move back to the right. At least this 4 wheel driver knows that much.
Now, I would like to know some of these old school trucking courtesies. For the record, I am considering a career change to trucking and this forum has been a great source of information.
Thanks -
All you need to remember is: that when passing ANY vehicle, when that vehicle is completely with-in the CENTER 2/3 of your side mirror, you can safely return to your lane without cutting in too soon.
I don't need ANYONE to tell me that I have "clearance".
The BIGGEST problem is drivers who have their hands glued to the steering wheel and can only reach the High-Beam switch. Some drivers give you a "quickie" and some stay there longer. But it doesn't matter. The "flash-bulb" quick is just as blinding as the 2-3 second (or longer) flash of bright lights.
THAT is more irritating than someone who doesn't "flash".
The FACT IS: that using lights to signal, or hailing them on the CB is illegal.
I will leave it to someone who has some spare time to look up the regulation. Alternately; ask the DOT Guy at your local neighborhood scale-house. -
In the daytime in Canada, where we ALL have daytime running lights, it's common practice to flash your "brights" in the daytime and it is NOT blinding if it's daytime!!! It's done constantly here and never have I heard of anyone complaining of it. Ever since daytime running lights came in, it's normal and accepted.

Two to three seconds?????? Try half a second. All you do is flick them on then off. How long does it take to flick a switch???? Takes less than a second. Anyone who does it any longer is being a dolt.
In the nighttime, it's always done with signals and headlights far as I know. I've seen the occasional car flash it's brights to say, "Okay, you can turn first" when we're all stopped at an intersection but not on the highway.
Why is flashing offensive to you???! I just learned about it about two months ago and I think it's neat
It's a "trucking thing" and courtesy and a kind of, "Hi, you're clear" and "Thanks!" conversation on the lonely highway at night.
What's the big deal? Why would you be upset for people who do it? If you don't want to pay attention to it, don't. It's really that simple.
There's much more important things in the world to get upset about than other truckers trying to be helpful when you don't want them to.

how is the thank you flash done?
