I have graduated truckers school. I got my cdl license class A third party. It took a minute but I got it. Now it seems like something is always happening when I think I'm going to finally get going something comes up either with my mvr which has a DUI 8 years ago. A drug charge back in 98 and my new cdl license suspended for 25 days due to I am unemployed and could not pay my car insurance. Can I get any advice? I'm 61 years old and made a drastic career move because I Love driving and traveling. I had been an independent courier and those cannot be verified for employment. Have I made a mistake thinking this was a great choice? Am I too old. Please someone what should I be doing? I just want to get started
Where are you located (city/state....or zip code)? What other citations/violations do you have besided that DUI 8 years ago? Did you get any CDL endorsements (tanker, doubles/triples)? BTW: No, you are NOT too old; many carriers actually prefer someone older and otherwise more mature. Your timing for getting into the industry is actually pretty bad; many carriers have stopped taking drivers with no experience, in many places. -- L
Say what part of the country you are in and what kind of job you are looking for. @Chinatown usually has some advise. I had a problem when I first got my CDL because I had been self employed. Werner wanted my tax returns and I told them no. No other company I applied to even responded. Swift was the only exception. So that's where I went. Trucking company policies wax and wane with the market. Just a couple of years ago one could get hired anywhere with just about any background because drivers were in such demand. Now they're being more picky again. I had a DWI in 1989. Having one from 1998 is not going to prevent you from finding a trucking job. Most trucking companies post their hiring policies online and there is always something about DWI/DUI's. Usually if it's over five or ten years they don't reject you for it. They tend to just check boxes as they read your application so read the hiring policy and see if you fall withing their guidelines. Lots of us old guys out here. That won't hold you back either.
Wow just started driving at 61 and you can retire and collect SSI at 62? If I'm still driving at 61 someone shoot me. Wait, nevermind, I already have that box checked.
Where is your location? You didn't waste your time getting a cdl, there's jobs out there for your. 61 is not old in trucking. There's no age discrimination as long as you can pass the physical and drug test. May have to take an in-house agility test for some types of trucking, such as food service.
Most companies aren't concerned about license suspensions for failure to pay insurance or failure to pay child support. They understand you can't pay those if you're unemployed.
