I've been adjusting brakes for years. been inspected a zillion times. Not once did any DOT man ask "who adjusted the brakes".I personally don't care ( in this instance) what the law says. When the Mom-mobile stops in front of me. I'm want to know I can do the same.

Again, legal or not EVERY driver should know how to adjust the brakes, and have the tools to do that with them at all times.

Last summer a HazMat PUCO inspector ran me down and pulled me into the southbound scale on I-71,(mm 53ish, the one thats been closed a while) after a hour of turn this on, step on that, blow this and pump that down, he claimed I had 1 trailer brake out of adjustment by 3/32s, he said I wasn't leaving til I got it fixed. I asked if I had to call some one, or could I do it my self, he said he didn't care who did it but it wasn't leaving til it was right. I adjusted it and was sent on down the road with a no violations found inspection form, but on the back page under officer notes it said " OOS brake violation, driver corrected, rechecked for conformation, equipment released. Now my CSA report has an OOS brake violation on it 12 pts for violation, 10 bonus pts for being on an empty placarded trailer.

I guess it is the truth that you were "told". It is still bad information. Only believe half of what you read and none of what you hear son.

It is true the trailer brakes only take a minute to adjust. The automatic brakes ONLY adjust when you are backing up and braking your trailer. I do that with every trailer I pick up because MOST of the time they need it badly. The DOT is right in stopping you if they see you in the back of the trailer with a wrench adjusting your brakes doing unauthorized mechanical work you are not qualified to do. If you can't adjust the automatic brakes from the cab, then get it fixed. And yes it is common for the automatic brakes to get stuck and needing to slam them to loosen them up. But consider the load you have. If you have a load that will shift, do not slam the brakes. Usually if you back up a loaded trailer they will easily adjust. Only slam the brakes on an empty trailer if needed. The time consuming part of the pretrip inspection is putting air into underinflated tires. Like I said when driving for Werner most of their trailers had underinflated tires. It takes a long time to properly inflate underinflated tires. Werner has gotten a lot better over the years about putting air in their trailer tires. I see far less cupped tires on their trailers now. Fill your trailer tires up with dry air from your air brakes. How do you know if your trailer brakes are adjusted? Usually you can hear them clicking when backing up and when the clicking stops they are better adjusted. If you apply the brakes separately to the trailer and it does not stop, then you have a problem. And as for I-80 going through Wyoming rather than Montana you are right. I meant what I meant, not what I said. Just because I am intelligent enough to see what is wrong in the trucking industry does not make me a bitter old man. I do hate corruption and incompetence probably more than most but that is because I know that mankind is capable of being much better than they are. And we would all be better off if we all did our part to do the best that we can.

I agree. After all, if you don't know how to adjust them, how do you know if they are out of adjustment? The DOT may or may not write you a ticket for adjusting brakes,AND if you have an accident, you are liable anyway. One things for sure, though...if you get inspected, and more than 20% out, they put you out of service. It's the most common reason nowadays why drivers get put out of service.
