If I were to remove the diff. and rear cover from my existing front drive axle, and replace with slotted covers made from 3/8 plate, would I have enough clearance to have the driveshaft passing through without any problems?

No but you can move front axle to rear and move rear diff to front and run it
-
Why couldn't he just keep the front axle the way it is, and take out the driveshaft between the two. That way not having to swap the two axles.
So it turns a dead yoke out the back. -
To do that the power divider would have to be engaged all the time. I don't know how well that would work long term, might be ok, but I wouldn't want to find out.
-
The output shaft would get all the power and nothing to the front unless the power divider is locked in.
-
If you swap the axles , you need to at least pull the axle shafts out and block off the openings. If not you will still have the same drag.
-
So if one was to move the rear to the front.
would putting a switch to dump the rear bags help with traction? -
-
Dumping the air would be easy but if your 5th wheel is behind front rear end then it will take weight off steer axle but put alot of weight on the drive axle if you have a air slide 5th wheel you might be able to have some long slides to let you slide it that far forward if you have the room behind the cab
-
I'm already 10200 loaded on my steers. So doing this might put almost all the weight on my front rear axle. That's a lot of weight. My 5th wheel is as far forward as I can be. The landing gear would rip my mudflaps off if it got any closer.
