I idle my truck probably, 98% of the time I am in it.. I do it for comfort. It can be 70 degrees outside but if you're sitting in a dock or parking spot and the sun is beating down inside that truck, guess what? The temperature starts to rise inside. If the humidity level is crazy high, no way to get around that without idling.. the A/C system depletes humidity from inside the cabin and controls the temperature.. I agree with OP, I can't sleep if it's too hot or too cold, and I ESPECIALLY can't sleep or even sit in the truck if it's humid outside! Judge all you want.. I don't care. My company doesn't care if I idle my truck. I can idle it all day long, they could care less. Even when I become an O/O, I'll idle my truck for comfort. I don't care about the cost of idling. The truck burns a gallon of fuel or less an hour, really, it ain't even more expensive than a hotel room to idle all night long! I don't live to keep and save every penny I make, I don't need to make top dollar to be happy. So even when I own my own truck, I will be idling the truck for comfort (until I get an APU installed).

Hell now that I think about it.. I don't even shut the thing off if I go inside a truck stop to eat or shower.. it gets started once when I get in it to start my day, and turned off once at the end of my trip, MOST days.

I might be getting an emissions truck soon, heard it's not very good to idle those.. That's going to be fun if the truck doesn't have an APU on it because I WILL be idling that truck just as much as the one I'm driving now.

OP, what kind of truck are you driving? I know some, like Volvo's for example, you have to wait for the "idle shutdown" message to pop up on the dash (usually within 5 minutes of idling) and then press the accelerator pedal down and the message will read "idle shutdown canceled" or something like that.

The emissions trucks doing do to well idling. Something to do with the exhaust temps not getting high enough which causes the DPF to fill up prematurely.

That's because you're not the one sitting in it.

No kidding. But they make climate control for a reason and the company doesn't install Apu's and we are allowed to idle as much as we want, so I will do so to keep the climate in control.

yeah actually i am, i have slept in my truck at near 0 and well into the upper 80's admittedly do cold better than hot esp if humid. electric blanket goes a long way in the cold. i could go along with the op if he had said 50 or 90 degrees, but 69 gets me, ill take a bit more discomfort than i would expect someone to take who isn't paying the bills. i could go along a bit more if he had said 50 or 90 degrees. but 69 come on. who would want to listen to the engine idle all night for only a coupe degree change in temperature. i still would not condone tampering with the truck my advice would still remain the same to ether get out of trucking or find a job with apu trucks or idle policys that suit his preference.

Honestly 69 sounds comfortable to me. Maybe it's because I have to buy my fuel and pay for my own repairs, but I'm not running my truck if I don't have to. Every revolution of that engine is one less revolution I can use to make money with before it dies.

If the truck has a Detroit Diesel, then it most likely is equipped with opti-idle.

Idle the truck at slow idle. Make sure the brakes are set. Turn the cruise off, then back on. Now the "IDLE MGMT" icon will be flashing on the dash. Be sure to KEEP THE KEY ON! Do NOT shut the truck off!

Go in the sleeper and turn the Detroit Diesel climate control on. Set the temp and the truck will maintain the temperature you set it at. It can be set for a 4, 10 and (I forgot the third) temp spread.
