    Hello Car Carrier Owners

I filed for my authority and I am in process of getting everything.

However IRP and IFTA process confused me a little. Do I pay IFTA only in state I am registered in (CT) or DO I pay IFTA for all states I am going to fuel Truck in? Also I should file New York HUT Tax separately I guess

Also Am I required to register in IRP? my gross weight is more than 26 000 but I do not have 3 axles on power unit.

Any ideas who has done all these stuff. (I realize how many sharks are eating Truckers income). Cannot wait when new president unfolds regulation eliminating policies.

IFTA is designed to pay one place only, where you are registered, and they will pay all the states you ran, based on your IFTA return. IRP is necessary when you will run in multiple states, over a certain weight. 2 axle commercial vehicles that run interstate should have IRP, or you would need to get a trip permit every time you leave Connecticut. It changed last year that you now have all states and Canadian provinces, instead of just those you intend to run.

Yes, if your gross weight rating is over 26,000 pounds you will need all of the above. Your IFTA (fuel tax) will be done in your home state of Connecticut as will your IRP (apportioned base plate). You will also have to register with New York for the NY HUT (highway use tax) if you plan on entering NY. Additionally, depending on where you plan to run you may also need Kentucky, Arizona, New Mexico, and I believe Oklahoma highway weight distance tax permits. And, if you are incorporated and run into or through New Jersey you will have to file for the corporate receipts tax on transportation companies.

Since you are heavy enough to require apportioned plates and IFTA you will need to track all miles driven in each state, keep fuel receipts, and file a quarterly tax and mileage return to show how much fuel you bought in each state. Do not make the mistake of buying cheap pump price fuel (NJ) as the taxes taken out are less than say NY or CT so you will end up writing a check at the end of the quarter to pay the additional taxes. Each state wants the tax revenues and registration fees for the amount of fuel you burnt and miles driven in their state, that is how they pay for road repairs.

As for authority, if you plan on doing any intrastate work (pick up and drop in the same state) in New York and Pennsylvania you will need to obtain a NY DMV number and PA Public Utility Commission authority.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

You are on the right track, also since you are over 26k you will need to have a cdl, I know you already do, but you will also need to register with a drug testing consortium before your first trip with the truck. These services usually cost about $100 a year and include the pre-employment and any random tests you may be called for. Yes, you need to do a pre-employment drug test on yourself as a one truck owner operator.

    Thank you for useful information

Is Concentra that consortium? I remember my past employer sent me to Concentra.

Do you have link to one of the legit consortium that does not involve middle man and I will be talking directly to where drug testing is conducted. I google returns lots of brokers middle men and association which offer me to pay association fee and then they will enroll me with someone else

I use Partners in Safety, they are based in Middletown NY with offices in NYC and Westchester county. I doubt they are close enough for you, but they may have an affiliate in CT.

    One more question

    Is driver background check Mandatory?

I don't remember my employer run it. Well should I run it about myself?

I contacted Concentra, they are everywhere in CT and in NJ, so I would probably use them

thank you for your link though

Yes, even as a one truck owner operator you will need to complete a driver qualification file and employment application, contact your previous employers, run your driving record, psp screening, etc. You can order a complete driver qualification file from JJ Keller, it has all the forms you need and a simple checklist to make sure you have done everything you need to so when your new entrant audit comes you will be ready and not have any problems.

    Also IRP is a mystery

Here is situation I am in right now.

I have Corporation which filed for MC and DOT.
However My Truck is on my Individual Name (cause finance company did not approve me for corporation, as it was new corporation, even though I told them I will be guarantor, they approved me as individual with my personal credit score)

So I am little confused. I guess I should do lease contract with my own corporation and lease my Truck. And Corporation will go to DMV and finalize registration process. Does it sound reasonable? When I was in DMV they told me only thing they need to know is DOT # and Insurance that states I have proper coverage and in Insurance Driver should be listed whoever is registering the Truck.

So where and how IRP comes on board? Is not this DMV who must issue me Number Plate?
