Just got hit with ifta/irp audit. What is the max penalty/fine/interest if I give them zero documents and just pay them AGAIN to leave me alone?

I doubt they’ll leave you alone. I just got an IFTA audit. The letter should have explained it. Think it was 20% first offense, 50% second offense for outstanding owed. That’s if records are illegible, and can’t be made any sense out of.

Maybe keep better records? Really? Proper record keeping is part of running a business, any business. If you don't have the time or ability, hire someone to do it for you. You are responsible as the owner of the business.

I got an ifta audit 6/7 years back. Auditor said i had the best records he had seen in 20+ years of doing it.
Didn’t stop him from justifying his job with a discrepancy in the state’s favor for a modest sum, with no way For me to prove otherwise without prepaying a much more significant fine with interest and penalties while fighting it.

If you think doing things legally prevents you being fined and penalized/ you are mistaken. State auditors have the states interest in mind, not the auditees.

Bureaucrats do what they do. BUT.......YOU did what was required by law to do....you kept records. No different than an IRS auditor combing thru your tax records to find a $200.00 mistake 3 years ago, to justify his/her job. It is petty BS. In the OP's case, from what he/she posted, it sounds like there is a record keeping issue in general.

Just went thru a IFTA audit. I was honest has some of my records were very disorganized and I had some stuff missing, first response I got was told I owed $9000. I about fell on the floor. So I dug up some more records along with debit card statements for fuel purchases to cover some receipts that were missing. Was called back by auditor and I quote “that helped you significantly, everything is matching up perfectly, you are down to about $200-$300 in fines” didn’t hear from her for a month and half or longer from this time, just got the audit back in the mail and I owe them $4200. At this point I am trying to decide if I should fight again or pay and take it as a lesson learned. It was a eye opener of how much I don’t do that they want. Receipts,BOLs and lists of miles ran and logs ain’t enough for these ####s. Even 1 year I accidentally ordered new stickers I must of been half asleep or maybe my kids were running around me. I clicked 2 stickers thinking I needed 1 for each side. So since I had 1 vehicle and 2 sets of stickers they also set that to a investigator from the state who I should be hearing from. All in all it was a terrible experience, they don’t give a #### about you, they are out for blood. I was told I was taken at random, I highly doubt that. I think there system looks for people that pay there bills and take care of there families. They know we need to keep going so they prey on people like me.

Do what you can to get your paperwork in order. It is a lesson learned to conduct your business in a organized way. It will help you in the long-term to be a better run business. When your day comes just say straight forward I didn't keep organized records accept the outcome. Move forward from this day & do different. All the best on your journey doing better.
