Hey all. So Iast week I bought my first truck from a private party. I obtained my 2290 and bobtail insurance. I do not have a contract to sign on with a company yet but I'm wanting to drive my truck to a shop to get some things fixed. From my understanding I can't get plates and registration without a dot number. What are my options as far as driving the truck before I get leased on and registered? Thanks

You must read your bob/tail insur. care fully it may only give you a time to get leased on to a co. to get your 750,000 or 1,000,000 insur. started, but you can drive to repair shop or to get the yearly dot insp. done if the bobtail insur says so?

I would get my own plate, so you can leave whenever you want. If you are unhappy with a company and using their plate it will be much more difficult.

He can’t get his own plate without real insurance, and he won’t have that until he has a lease.
OP, take the risk and drive it or have it towed, only you can make that choice. BTW, bobtail insurance only covers you if you are leased to a company.

In Florida you can get a 'car tag' for the truck and drive it without working it.

I guess it's the bobtail insurance you're talking about. I get my own insurance and tags.

You can’t get an intrastate or IRP tag in FL, or any other state, without the liability insurance provided by the motor carrier either. Bobtail insurance is a secondary insurance and won’t get a tag anywhere.

Unfortunately I don't qualify to get a plate
Yes taking the risk is what I will end up doing. With everything I have to go through here to get a plate Its like I might as well get my authority. I'm not ready for that level of the trucking game yet lol

You can't get a non commercial, under 26,000, personal use plate, at least temporarily? You would have to have liability insurance, but once you get ready to lease on you could cancel that and get the insurance and tags you need.

The not for hire would be the farm truck plate which I can't get either. The only temp registration we have here is the 45 day for the IRP
