Interesting concept...

Some situations ratchet binders don't work very well.

 

New toys are so much fun

 

Snap binders were outlawed in South Africa about 20 years ago due to their propensity to punish stupidity. I really was not happy but in retrospect I find the ratchet/screw type better. Only issue I have is when using long chains and placing the binder some way from the chain anchor points the chain can start twisting when you start winding it. If you only have space for minimal rotational moment of the handle the screw does not actually ratchet so you need to find a way to stop the chain twisting. Never found a impossible situation but snap binders have their place and can be quicker on some loads.

 

I always kept a few pieces of short rebar I found on job sites to put in the rings by the hook to wedge them to keep from twisting. I'm sure this is common knowledge.

 

For instance when you are securing something like a dunnage bulkhead, ratchets are horrible for. Or when your securing machinery and your anchor point is close to the deck, that makes your anchor point close to the deck, ratchets are a pain to use then

 

I always kept a few snap binders around when I was OTR, I thought about getting a set of these.

Yes, specifically I hate ratchets any time the chain and the binders are laying flat against the item being secured. (Like when using a chain over the dunnage like you said). Depending on the circumstances there can be work arounds but it's all a pain, snaps are so much easier for that sort of thing.
