I had drivers making $1000/wk plus in 1979 at .32/mi. It just blows me away that drivers make the same money now 40yrs later.
Interesting....

This is a problem in quite a few employment sectors. Wages have not kept up with inflation (and I mean real inflation, not the bogus CPI that the government issues).magoo68, Oldironfan, AModelCat and 1 other person Thank this.

Gasoline 0.26 a gallon leaded from Mobile around 1969
Wage hourly around 2.60 I think, I am not certain.
A Hershey Candy Bar, Milk Chocolate is around a nickel.
They closed the Gold Window in '72. Silver Certificiates were no longer redeemable at the bank for Silver Eagles Bullion coin. ( That were themselves legal Tender) Ounce of Gold Troy was about 170 I believe give or take a little. Silver was almost a waste product thanks to the Silver Gang that did some stuff in our Senate back in the 50's onwards.
Ford Maverick, Option Seatbelt, powersteering, Factory Air condtioning, and 302 V8 two barrel (NExt time slap a 4 barrel on there) was around 3600 invoice. I still have that original Invoice but the car itself was long gone. The ays of it being one owner only were over. Reliability went out along with it.
A 4 bedroom two story home with two car garage and basement on one acre came out to 25000 flat in 1964. That house sold very handsomely many decades later.Oldironfan Thanks this. -
I am on medical disability and COLA (Also VA Vets Benefits for Ex... and so many tens of millions of others) determines what percentage is added on for Cost of Living increases in our Monthly allotment. From what I can figure it's going to stand at 2.8% if not very close to 3% increase.
In the Obama years there were no increases to speak of. I refer to those as the lost years.
I have been working really hard to position my finances to where when SSA decides to impose a mandatory cut across the board on all benefits in the USA by 24% permanent Without consideration to anyone I will still be ahead financially. Many will not. At the 3% rates that COLA is increasing after roughly 2024 to 2036 (2024 is the expected judgement day cuts in all beneficiaries in entire SS system.) It will take 8 to 10 years to restore that 24% loss. So if a SS person gets 1000 per month 24% increase would be around 1240 a month. If 1000 was cut hard 24% you are looking at a final benefit check of 760. This is a hypothetical situation. But a very real problem because there are only two workers paying 15 dollars per payroll into SS per retiree over 62.
The retiree at 62 can defeat the COLA cuts and defeat the budget limitations written into our Laws by waiting until 70. Then SS Checks will be in the excess of 1800 Give or take a few hundred depending on that person's lifetime earnings.
I do not expect SSA to still be standing after 2030. It will cause the United States to be forced to open a history book at a blank page marked in the blood of our retired parents who cannot survive on air and surrounded by people filled with mendacity.Ind0792 and Oldironfan Thank this. -
In 1974 $5 would get you a case of beer, two packs of smokes, gas to the party and back, with change left over. Although I used to have to pay 35 cents a pack to buy smokes from a cigarette machine back in 1968, cuz they never asked for ID lol.
