Hello to all. I've been a lurker on here for a while now and just wanted to say this place has been a GREAT tool for helping me get some valuable insight and gain some needed perspective about the industry as I'm entering the field. TR has helped me alot with planning and direction. I appreciate this forum and all those that are here on the regular helping newbs. THANK YOU!! I am 54, changing careers into truck driving. I finished school thru my local community college (grant funded) and I got my CDL A last week. I also have my TWIC and X endorsment. My goal is to drive hazmat tanker and/or dry bulk with a company here in Columbia SC but need experience first. I had my first interview today with a company hauling containers home daily. They have a student training/mentoring program for the first month or so and pay would be $18 per hour during that time but then jump to 52cts mi and 25$ per hour non driving once I pass training and get cut loose. The terminal manager spoke very highly of the trainers and their experience. Also he said that the training would be quite intensive and very safety focused. I'm interested in all that, I want good training and to be a safe driver. Now the part I'm not so sure about...I would be starting on the night shift which I think I can handle alright, BUT many of their lanes are going through the mountains of western NC and eastern TN. Heavy loads and winding roads. At night. The night shift would be terminal to terminal and all drop/hook which is good I think, but im a little sketched on the heavy haul in the mountains. The company I eventually want to work for said after six months and they'd consider bringing me on so if all went well I could be looking at till the end of summer then moving on. Does this sound like a good move to get on doing intermodal for first gig and to gain my much needed experience?

Congrats. Now, pay attention in training and don't be afraid to ask questions. Get your time in and keep your MVR clean. Good Luck

The company wouldn't put you on that nighttime mountainous route if there were any doubt you couldn't handle it.

Congratulations on starting off correct and get your CDL paid for by someone else. That was the right thing to do so you're off to a good start. What was your prior career? Trucking is vast and there are many nuances in different sectors of the industry. Like for example a twic card I've often actually referred to as a waiting card, so it's a good thing you're going to be getting paid by the hour. A FedEx teams doubles driver doesn't ever wait, or back up trailers. You're going to be doing a lot of both doing intermodal nights.nextgentrucker Thanks this.

Really?
They don't have any idea of what he is capable of, and neither does a new driver in that situation.
Statements like that are akin to giving every student in the class a trophy for participation.lual Thanks this. -
That's not my policy, it's the company policy.OldeSkool Thanks this.
