Starting with Knight next week. Very interested in going Intermodel, or Port and Rail as they call it. Would it be a good idea to start Intermodel, or should I cut my teeth OTR Dry Van or Reefer for a while first? Knight has a terminal in my hometown of Las Vegas. Intermodel sounds pretty good. Pay and home time sound decent. They told me, they get average of 2500 miles per week intermodel. Thanks in advance.

Ask if the intermodal job means going to the California ports a lot.
If it does, I wouldn't touch it.
I could deal with the rail yards, but not the seaports.

It would most definitely include California seaports. Are they bad in general, or is it currently, due to the post pandemic issues? Can you elaborate?

There's only one port that quick in & out.
The rest are controlled by the Longshoreman Union.
It can take hours or all day, just to get a container or drop one off.
Those union workers hate and despise truckers and make a game out of delaying them as many hours as possible. If you complain, then they add more hours to your delay.

    RBP-SlingShot and jgtrucking Thank this.

See if Facebook has a page for Knight intermodal drivers.
Do as much research as you can before taking that job.

    jgtrucking Thanks this.

You do not want to start on intermodal. You’re going to gain way more experience going otr in a much shorter period of time. You’re goal should be to get experience and move onto somewhere better then swift/knight anyways

intermodal is a nightmare... in my opinion you’re better off if you never set foot in a rail yard. the equipments terrible. You’ll constantly be running ino mechanical issues. if they rent chassis you’ll probably lose a tire once a week.
If you want home time it might be worth it but that’s about it

If you want to be home go otr for 3-6 months and apply to local jobs during that time. Some one better then knight will hire you. They won’t pay but you’ll be getting experience while being at home.
    that’s what I did.

    Chinatown and jgtrucking Thank this.

It's like going to the DMV/MVA on the last day of the month, 1 hour before closing. Every. Dang. Day!
