I've seen quite complaints on this forum plus hear all the truck stop banter on how easy a DM's job is...
How many of you have been DM's?
How any of you have actually sat with your DM while they worked? I sit with my DM everytime im there and it's definetly not easy. Just sitting there makes me want to strangle these drivers. Im amazed at their sheer ignorance.
Is it really easy?

Unless they've been a DM they have no clue just how easy or hard a DM'S job is.I would say at first it's hard then like everything else it becomes routine.I've talked to many dispatchers and they all say it's not bad.It looks hard but I guess is is'nt.I could'nt do it because u have to be fast at typing.
Everett Thanks this. -
Dealing with unrealistic "wants" of some drivers, wild and lame excuses, and drivers who can't get the job done consistently can NEVER become routine. I'd rather herd cats.

No, it isn't easy, nor is it always fair. But the problem lies with the fact that they are now almost always hired on the basis of how good they are on computers with no real understanding of what business they're working in.

I don't know how they can keep track of everyone especially the DM'S that don't work regular with the drivers, but they do.With my company if you're not up and rolling after your 10 hr brk you'll ether get sometihng on the qualcomm or most likely a call and does'nt matter whos working at that piticular time.
-
Sometimes you don't want to start rolling when your 10 is up. It all depends when the next p/u or del is. Don't want to start the 14 hr clock to soon. I don't want some snoby dispatcher bothering me. Let them call the screw ups.truckerdave1970, pattyj, LaBubba and 2 others Thank this.

I have driven an O/O truck for an owner that didn't want to be bothered. He was busy doing other things. I simply called the accountant and told him what I needed and he paid me with a t-check. It was here I got my dream and desire for being an O/O. Too bad the guy was a crook too and ended up loosing it all. I always had money when I needed fuel, paycheck or repairs. He just failed to pay any income tax. Accountant would complete the papers, get them all ready for the IRS, the owner would take them and "write a check and mail them off". Finally caught up with him.
Fun time being told there is a bus ticket waiting for you at the fuel island to get home on. There were some nice people there to make sure I didn't leave with the truck too. But what do you do.
I have driven as a company driver where you are at the mercy of a dispatcher.
I have worked as a dispatcher for a hopper company that ran OTR. Hoppers are cheap rates and cut throat operators.
I have worked for O/O that want to be a part of your life and will work with you to get things done.
No single persons job is easy. They must all play nice together to make things happen. The bigger the company, the more people must play together.
Unfortunately, knowledge is power and people like to play that card....
The qualcomms are nice I am finding as you don't have to play the phone game and take time off the road to make that happen. Now they ##### when you don't send the message on qualcomm when you call with your morning check. I ain't taking 15 minutes to send a silly message when all you have to do is pull me up on the program and see my status. Something a 15 second phone call can handle....
Or if things are good....
Just leave me the hell alone....
Pandora's on the radio and I am jamming to some of them great old country singers like Waylon, willie and Johny...Last edited: Mar 31, 2012

I agree. But my company is very demanding.Glad I doon't drive OTR for them.I'm a local driver for them and my dispatcher is one sweet lady.Everytime I go up there which I like to call the war room,I hear a dispatcher yelling at another driver.
