If you have your Class A with automatic restriction but then later go to test in a manual transmission to remove it, do you have to do the pre-trip and back through the cones again, or do you simply do the roat test only? I don’t have this restriction but I was just curious.
Edit: Also if you have automatic restriction, are you allowed to drive a manual if you’re accompanied by someone who doesn’t have it (similar to having your permit)?
Is pre-trip/backing on test to remove automatic restriction?

You go through the entire exam.
to answer your other question, no. -
Manual restriction removal consists of a pretrip and road test, no skills (backing) portion. You are allowed to drive manual only if you have the restriction removal permit and are accompanied by licensed driver without the restriction.

Pardon, but is this question for informational purposes? If you have a class A CDL, if you have to do them or not should not be an issue for you.
Many years ago I was stuck at a terminal for several days while my tractor was being repaired. I was bored and caught a ride from the hotel back to the terminal. For this to make sense remember one of our customers was in Oklahoma and was a back from a 4 lane highway to a dock about 200 feet from the road. There was a small S turn in it and there was NO room to turn around. You had to back in from the road. One of the people that did orientations was helping a new driver with this maneuver and was having a problem. It had been a while since I had been there, but the guy stopped me and asked me if I would demonstrate that it could be done. He had almost 2 acres coned off. I spotted the trailer right on the spot and did so in about maybe 4 to 5 minutes. Not skill, just doing from muscle memory after doing these kinds of backs for years.
My point? If you are already out on your own even with that tranny restriction you should be able to do them with no sweat. Also, that pretrip thing is something a lot of drivers don't do or they half(redacted) do it.tscottme Thanks this. -
I am looking at and inspecting (whatever the hell you are looking at), it isn't broken, bent, damaged or missing....

States vary in what they do to remove an Auto restriction. Call or email YOUR state. Knowing what another state does on the test doesn't help you. Why is everyone so fearful to ask their state or make a phonecall?
