Hello everyone. I have a class A CDL, but have not driven commercially for 9 years. My daughters are all grown up and the youngest left the nest a few months ago to join the Navy. I have two adult children living out of state and so, I am ready to get back on the road. I plan on spending my "home" time visiting my adult children: one in Florida, one in Illinois, and one in Ohio. I am single; so nobody to come home to--I am going to go OTR, reside in my truck, and see the country! Ahhh, free at last...
Here's a heads up for anyone in a similar position: there is a WIA--"Worker's Investment Act"--grant available for those who need on the job training. The government will pay for your truck driver training--refresher or formal training course--depending on your financial/employment situation! This varies from county to county and state to state. I was fortunate enough to qualify by being under-employed. So, I start my refresher course in two weeks--$3500 that I do not have to pay back--pretty sweet deal. Within two months, I'll be back behind the wheel and working for a trucking company.
I am researching to find a good fit. I drove for Barr-Nunn before and really liked this company; however, now I do not have enough experience to get back on with them.
I am looking at Knight, but have read much negative feedback. Does anyone have any suggestions? I plan to run all 48 and Canada and plan to stay out for 3-4-5-6 weeks at a time.
Thanks guys.
It is nice to have this forum. In the early 2000's I did not have internet access, reliable cell phone, or even a television in my truck. Things surely have changed!
Peace,
Bobbie
