A quick water tight fix on the road is to take a tube of rtv (silcone) and squeeze into a butt connector and then crimp as normal.
If your tube of rtv is hard and mostly dried up but still has a soft spot poke a hole where its soft and squeeze out there. It will self seal and be good for another day.

    Yeah That!!!!!
I cringe whenever I see someone just cutting on a wire, splicing another wire onto the stripped one, then covering it with a wrap of electrical tape, pulling the tape til it separates, which leaves a little tail to start unraveling.

My present truck was full of rigging like that, "poor boy" chicken lights all over it. I actually pulled some of the stuff off before I left the dealer, and cut/re taped to disconnect other lights. Told salesman I was afraid the truck would catch fire before I made it home.

Recently started using a product, think it is called "Liquid Tape"; in a small can with a brush, similar to Never Seize. This stuff is like liquid rubber, dries fast, somewhat flexible, and seems to hold up to the elements pretty well. I especially like to use it to coat the open butt connectors, and brush it on top of electrical tape to prevent unraveling.
When you cannot solder, try using a very little of the dialectic grease, then tape, then the liquid tape- I believe that would hold up pretty well.
