I am replacing the two u joints on my steering shaft because it is loose. The main problem is I was told their is a bearing that is wore out that is at the bottom of my steering column and Kenworth does not have or will not sell just the bearing you have to buy the whole thing which is almost a grand. Has anybody ever dealt with this or have a suggestion?

Maybe someone knows the # on the bearing.Im sure a KW steering column is not the only app for this $15 bearing.I replaced the bearings in the pulley's on the front of my MXS for like $20 a piece instead of $100 for a new pulley.U just need the bearing#.Maybe someone on here will know what it is.

I got my steering shaft u joints done at a driveshaft shop, they have access to pretty much any u joint made.
Many dealerships wont rebuild anything steering related for fear of the liability if something goes wrong...just one more thing the corporate lawyers had their way with.
You should be able to remove the bearing and take it to a bearing shop to match up.Big John Thanks this. -
Thanks, I tracked down a used steering column and seen the bearings. You cannot replace them you have to buy the whole column, just the way it is made. KW priced one to me for over $900 and some change and that is for a straight no tilt column, I can just imagine what a tilt one would cost.

Is it worn or just dry?Maybe u can grease it with a needle.Just a thought, cause I've never had an issue with a column bearing. And I've had a couple trks with well over a million miles on them.Good Luck

Keep in mind that the cost and time assocaited with such a rebuild may outweight the staright ahead cost of re&re'ing and replacement. This is usually the main reason why a dealer would never rebuild a column. Same with alternators and starters, nobody rebuilds them any more becuast the time and cost of the parts will usually be more expensive than just replacing and getting said unit back to work.
Also note that a modular piece like a column is generally not broken down for the guys at your parts counter, because like you said liability is huge, no one want to be resonsible for a rebuild such as this to go wrong in the slightest. I would have to take the assembly number, submit a research request through PACCAR to TRW for a breakdown or part identification(takes a couple of days), find out the availability of said part from TRW(at least 1 maybe 2 days), place order and wait for the part to arrive(7-10days). So now we are at two weeks when I probably could have had a complete column over night.
Dont de-value your own time, if you do the work there is still a cost you are paying. whether it is time away from work, family, or recreation, it still has value. spend your time and money wisely! Also ask to speak to the parts manager about the price, most counter guys have a 5-10% window of pricing to work with but the manager has more authority to deal with pricing matters, saying that the columns are not made by the OEM, get the part number, shop it around! Work smart!Big John Thanks this. -
Does anyone on here know how to remove the plastic cover on the tilt steering column on a 2014 W900? I'm getting a growling sound when I turn the wheel. I'm wondering if it is a bearing or a spring rubbing against something.

Usually when you hear a noise from your Steering Wheel it's because you need a new Clock Spring.

Thanks for the reply boneebone, although that wasn't the reply I was hoping for. Lol
