I drive a 2000 T2000 for a guy who's leased to Dahlsten. He pays me good and pretty much anything I need for the truck he says get.

Well it was due for service today so I figured I'd save him some money and do the service myself. It's just an oil change and replacing all the filters. No big deal as the savings will eventually come back to me. Besides, the past couple weeks he's spent money on parts. Things break. World of the O/O I'm learning.

Anyhow, I would like to smack the guy who decided to hide the batteries behind the ground clearance/aerodynamics sides and steps for the driver. WTF were they thinking. lol I told Jerry(owner) that I thought the batteries needed checked and he said go ahead. Well a couple were bad so he told me to buy four new ones and put them in. No problem. lol

Anyhow, I brought the truck back to my place after replacing batteries and was putting the siding back on. It made me realize when I make the jump in a couple years to buying my own truck, the T2000 probably won't be what I buy.

Overall, its a good driving truck. Plenty of room inside and with the top bunk, I put it down and use it for storage, holds my fridge etc... Really, the only complaint is the drivers door seems to be noisy as heck when it's really noisy. I'll have to figure out how to fix that. lol

But to work on the truck....geez, it's a pain in the arse. You can remove the inner fenders over the front tires and it gives a little more room but dang. I pride myself on being pretty handy. I can turn a wrench and handle a lot of road side problems.

Whoever designed this truck really had their head up something. Maybe if I didn't want to try and do a lot of the maintenance myself, I'd feel different. But for the O/O who wants to save the labor costs, I really feel this truck will frustrate the heck outta you. Me anyhow. lol

    Okay, my rant is over.

That is one, of many, reasons I'll stick with a T800, W900 or 379. I just put 4 new batteries in mine and I spent maybe 2 minutes getting the battery box cover off. Trucks like T2000, 387, freightliner Cambodias, etc, are bought (new) by people who will never do so much as 15 seconds of maintenence on them, unlike an O/O. These trucks do fill the bill for O/Os in the used truck markets, so I am not bashing anyones taste, just saying personaly I'll never buy one of these types. JMO

Well, it's a learning process for me right now. I remember when I first got the truck I couldn't figure out where the batteries were. I was like WTF? After I figured it out I thought it was pretty stupid. Now, after having to replace all four I KNOW it is a pretty stupid design. lol

It might not be so bad if it was a new(er) truck but its 10+ years old. The bolts/nuts that hold the skirting on, two are "broke" so I had to reach under there and get a wrench on the nut. Just a pain.

I was up in Mankato, MN a while back and it wouldn't start. Wouldn't do anything when I turned the key to fire it up. I had the skirting off then as I was told there was a starter relay in the battery box. Ha...no there's not. I ended up jumping the solenoid over and started it. Got me to Lincoln, NE to his mechanic. They ended up taking the skirting back off and when they tightened up the bolts they did so with air. I think that's what screwed up those two. Doesn't need to be torqued out.

BTW, there's only one relay on it...in the cab. Guess just because a relay "clicks" doesn't mean it's good. Didn't realize that.

I like my 2000. I figure I spend three years inside and enjoying the space, amenities, etc. So if I invest 3 hours every three years to change the batteries...well that's a good investment for me.
