I was checking my atlas to look at my routing up thru kentucky for truck routes and restrictions and it said class A hwys restricted to 40k lbs and class AA hwys 64k lbs. What exactly are those? Like us hwys and country roads? So once I exit the interstate at 80k lbs I'm legal until I get on a county road, then id be overweight and just have to deal with it? Or does class a mean something else?

It varies. In GENERAL a US Hiway is AAA. A single or double digit state hiway (SR 10) is AA and a 3 digit number is class A. (SR 100)

You can check your route here: transportation.ky.gov/his_web_query/TW_Query.aspx

BUT vehicles over 96 inches wide are only permitted on the national network. It is enforced on the smaller state routes. So KY 100 going into Scottsville could get you both oversize and overweight tickets.

31W between Munfordville and E-town, 102 wide will be ignored, but anything wider will be ticketed. With the I-65 construction, Vehicle Enforcement has been having a good time.

The Rand McNally maps are years out of date. The current map of truck routes in KY is at:

    kytcgis.ky.gov/his/viewer.htm

And don't just follow other trucks. A 96 wide van is common for mining service. Some are 12 feet high, for the low clearance bridges.

And Rand McNally lists low clearance bridges on the National Network ONLY. Get off the network and you are on your own.
