I was overseas 88m and wanted to drive when I got back. I went to roehls school that's free for veterans and doesn't tie you into a year contract. I quit after 8 months otr and bought my own truck doing local work.

If you will live in Savannah, GA then that's tanker heaven. You can make some real good money in tankers around $55K - $65K per year. Here's some companies that will hire you from a good 160 hr. or longer CDL school:
Schneider Bulk
Superior Carriers
SVTN
Trimac
CTL Transportation
All these companies hire new CDL grads and haul lots of chemical loads out of Savannah.Last edited: Mar 9, 2014

I got out of the army in '09 myself and recently decided to get into trucking. It's hard being away from family for 2 weeks at a time (OTR Driver), but if you have a good work ethic it seems like you can make a decent living at it. Many local companies want you to have 6-12 months of experience. I would suggest doing a little research. I'm with Roehl, they have a great CDL school and follow up training program. Also, like quite a few other companies, you can use the 2 year apprentice program from your GI Bill to earn an extra 12k on top of your pay for the first year...not sure how the 2nd year pays. Your local opportunities will depend on city/state, but places like Coke, Pepsi, etc...those type of companies that deliver to local grocery or convienence stores, will have opportunities to be home daily and many weekends, but they are much more labor intensive than OTR Drop n Hooks and usually want some type of experience.
Anyway, before you choose a company, look what others are saying about them. But also keep in mind, that most people that come to say something, are here because they're upset. If everything is fine with your company, you usually don't think about telling others on a forum about it. My experience so far with Roehl has been great, but I'm sure there are others who have not had the same experience. Good Luck!
