Yeah Hammer, that is the Freightliner Vocational SD114, basically it takes the place of the old FL112 that used to be on some stingers and 5 paks, I may be wrong, but I still think they do a Fontaine roof panel chop on that truck, and sink the air ride cab mounts, and I still think it is taller than the Sterling?
You can get decent power in it DD13 470/1650 also heavy/wide front axle, and "should" be able to spec new DT-12 tranny shortly, plus with a true stinger that truck only has a 31" front axle setback with the SF axle.
Honestly I had looked at them and I REALLY like the WS 4700 but with truck you can not get ext. cab and that is what I would need.
Thanks for the pic J.

One thing I always taught those new to carhaul is to eliminate wasted motion. Have a system and stick to it. Speed in loading will come. How many times have you loaded or unloaded next to someone and they are all over the truck, multiple times. You are putting your skids up and they still have vehicles to go. And you never rushed, ran, etc. Wasted Motion.
passingthru69, KANSAS TRANSIT, Thumper and 1 other person Thank this. -
Saw a few of those setups when i went to contrel to get the truck ive got now i dont think it or this new volvo hold a flame to the sterling setup it was just fast and easy to load
and your right you can get alot bigger units on it then i can on this one or the pete i had with the same trailer
KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
I couldn't find the height on the Freightshaker, but IIRC, the Volvo with the roof mod is just under 2" taller than the Sterling was. The biggest problem with them was the cost of working on them, with the engine stuffed so far back in there. Even something simple like an overhead took a couple hours of getting things out of the way before you could even work on them. -
Yeah, they were about as close to a cabover as you are going to get without the tilt cab. I believe they were a 101" BBC. The other issue is, the Sterling was that height out the door, with any of the other trucks, lowered cab Pete, cut roof Volvo, dropped Freightliner, you pay DEARLY for that "Modified by Fontaine" sticker.
BTW, I just priced up a short nose Volvo 430, but asked about their "midroof" option on that sleeper, dealer had no idea what I was talking about, calls his rep, "oh yeah, we offer it, but it is an 11,000 option!!!!!"
Yeah, it's done at Fontaine, 11,000 to add a fiberglass top to a midroof 430, thanks but no thanks.
Hammer166 Thanks this.
