Does dispatch ever ask an otr or regional driver to do local work, and if so, does it happen very often. Also can a driver say no, or do they use the strong arm tactic and threaten to terminate the driver.

If you are OTR, you can be dispatch anywhere in the lower 48. If they are short drivers on a local/dedicated account, you can be dispatched to it. Can you say no? Yep, but if you do, expect to sit. Normally if they are putting you on that, it is because freight is slow where you are, or that account is extremely short handed and they need help.

Word of advise, take it, don't turn it down, OTR guys will normally make MORE MONEY doing these accounts because we get paid OTR, and not that accounts pay. I make out like a bandit when I fill in for the JCP account.

When an otr is doing a local how do they get paid, hourly or flat rate, and how much is hourly if that is how they pay on local.

About the only time I get local work is when I am close to home and they don't want to send me too far away from home so the day before I go home I will several different local runs just to drop back at the OC for another driver. When I do those runs, I am paid $25 flat rate for anything under 25 miles, I believe, and a premium added to my cpm pay for runs from 25 to 50 total miles. that is for my regional pay structure, it may be different for OTR drivers. Hope that helps.

you get paid the same you would normally get paid.

Sometimes I get put on the JCP account. This account is a 2-3 stop delivery, usually takes you entire 14 hour day, and is all driver hand unload. I don't mind filling in on it, because they pay me my OTR pay instead of what the drivers on the account make.

I get paid all the miles. If it is a 3 stop delivery, I get paid $25 each for the extra 2 stops. I also get paid $100 to unload the trailer, plus the DH miles back to the DC. It makes for one heck of a pay check when I am filling in even if just for 1 o 2 days before I go home.
