Well yeah of course thats the way the world and people work. Learn from your mistake right?
A drivers hos mistake can cost millions of dollars and close a company down and can cause the driver his CDL and or possibly prison time! So working for the one's who want you to run legal is in your best interest and you running legal is in your best interest!
But I sort of agree, We always cared just didn't always have the tools we have today back then.![]()

So I can drive my unloaded truck around on my home time to go to the beach and get salt water taffy? (non work related). Will that be logged on line 1/off-duty?
-
If your company will let you, if you own the truck then yes.

All time spent working on the truck or going to get parts is line 4. An o/o says oh yeah my brakes were adjusted tire pressure checked etc. DOT(post accident)says show me the reciept for the shop doing the work and you taking it there and picking it up or show me where you logged doing the work yourself uhh! Also doing compensated work for your uncle fred at the xyz company gets logged line 4 also. When in doubt think to yourself how is this going to look from the witness stand?????

Back then you had the tools, Q-Comm has been used in trucks for how long now?
The company that you work for did not care about HOS until about 1.5 years ago. Your company had a reputation of only needing to log time stamped things. I'm not trying to just pick on your company, there are lots and lots of companies that have the same policy. But, your company did not take HOS to heart until the mishap.
The companies are in it to make money any way they can. A mishap is already figured into the cost. The only time it becomes a problem is when the victims what more then what was project as a settlement.

I am sorry to say but my company has been concerned about HOS since 2000 that I know of. Since I came back! Prior to that 5 years I don't really know what was up since I did not work there. Prior that 5 years I would say we did try and calculate how many miles a driver drove in a week and start looking harder. The problem was when they got rid of their "key" people they didn't do so good on their audit. Then they realized "logs" is a key part of the company to keep running. So I am not sure where you are coming from 1.5 years ago. I will say you might get a bad apple in the company and in that case you are the driver and should report it to someone within safety. We do care, but if we are not aware we can't help

EXACTLY: The point is are you on line 1 (free to do as you please) , line 2 (Are you in the sleeper) line 3 (are you behind the wheel, with 2 hands on it, well some maybe 1) line 4 (are you working, but not driving?) That's what should show on your logs. You need to know the regulations as to what is going to constitute a break or isn't.
1) 10 hours in the sleeper
2) 10 hours off duty
3) 10 hours by combining lines 1 &2 (so I can be off 1 hour, sleep 4, go off 5)
Or I can split break:
Study them rules
