I know guys who log sleeper birth for everything unless they are home. Which is what I do. Company and DOT has never had an issue with it. I also know guys who log off duty anytime the truck is not moving. They have never been flagged for it either.
I'm sure if you get some DOT who is wanting to be a pricke, then he can probably say something. But if I'm not home, I log sleeper birth when I shut down. Whether it is shower, food or setting in the truck. Sleeper birth means I am not working. But I am still living in my truck. When I go home and I am not living in my truck, then I will log off duty when the truck is parked. If someone wants to get so nit picky about that, well then so be it. It's pretty stupid if anyone does.

i log off duty. less likely to be questioned. unless 8 hours of sleep.
dot knows you weren't in the sleeper while your truck was being worked on.
commen sense and smarts when it comes to your logbook. -
You have not given us enough information. If you have stopped for the night, then I log Sleeper. If I on a shippers property and they are loading the truck, then you have choices to make. If you have to move the truck when they are finished loading you are still on duty. If not, off duty.
Are you on paper logs? Are you on E-Logs? Do it the way you want to do it. You are the one who has to sign it. If they tell you something that you are uncomfortable with, write down the time and date and keep it in your records. When you return ask safety for an explanation. If you don't like that, ask the DOT. -
It wouldn't matter what you said. Your report would stay the same with no added violations. Fortunantly, stupidity and / or ignorance is still not a violation.
