    So!

    I’m running dedicated for Walmart.

It’s my first day with a new DC based in eastern PA.

they felt the need to specifically tell me they deliver to Long Island.

why do they need to tell me that? I’ve never been! Is it bad?!?

It can be chaotic so keep your head on a swivel and drive defensively. Suggest you trip plan all your dispatches, including looking at Google Earth. Always have two back up routes that you can utilize.
NEVER DRIVE ON PARKWAYS IN NYC METRO AREA!!

Getting out to Long Island is easy. GWB to Throgs Neck, south to LIE, east to Long Island. There is no parking, although I would assume that you can do your 30 at Walmart. Make sure that you have plenty of hours for the trip back.

You are heading into a ancient place where truckers do not always get back out.

In my day early on I was extremely aggressive and hostile with the great big semi. The 4 wheelers got the message fast. I am making a left and it's happening. Crunches, profanity and status of light does not matter.

they felt the need to tell you that is because, ...YOU WILL BE GOING THERE.

the traffic can be horrendous on the island. if you are going there during the morning rush hour, you are basically all set to get in, as everyone is leaving.

God help your sorry butt, if you have to go on the island in the afternoon hours, as then EVERYONE is heading back to the island....

all my time on the island, i was incredibly lucky, i had to go there during the morning rush hour, and i got to leave maybe before noontime..there was still traffic, just not as bad during "normal rush hours" in either direction.

They feel the need to disclose that because if they didn't, they'd eventually dispatch some yahoo that refuses to go there. Then they gotta find someone else. The last place I worked had a lot of customers on the island, and in the five boroughs. The first question the dispatcher asked when she came into orientation... 'Who will NOT go to the city or Long Island?'

There were 15 in the room, and seven hands went up. The next day in orientation, there were only 8 of us.

Some people have a fear of that place for some reason. I think mostly because of the lunch counter tales they've heard. In reality, I didn't mind going there, as long as I had good directions. It actually was kind of fun for me, having never been out of the sticks before. My first load into a major city was Brooklyn, 7AM delivery. Talk about throwing someone to the wolves! But I survived, and actually volunteered to go there more often.

Had a septic cleaning company that got 3 loads of sulfuric acid a week. Way out near Brookhaven. They had 2 tanks and my driver would deliver by 4 am; his $20.00 tip would be protruding from the tank he off-loaded into this time...He was always back under the loading rack before 9 am ready to do another load...

They always sent me to deliver latex to Long Island Paint with trainees as it was a pump off and a 9 am delivery in Glen Cove...over the GWB b/4 7 am. We would back in and wait for them to open.

You can expect to think the Cross Bronx will be bad and it won't be; then the next day you get to examine it one inch at a time!

You never know when the city will be easy but you can count on it being difficult when going or coming from the island...
