Hi - looking for some straight up advice on what type of compensation I could receive if I was an owner operator of tri drive tractor with a tri axle tank or a dump truck.
I recently completed a heavy duty equipment course (articulating rock truck and front end loader) at IHE School in Kelowna. I have given a lot of thought on different ways to approach my career - I am seriously considering the trucking industry - short haul. I am not sure where to go, and who to speak to in regards to this. I am currently in the lower mainland and have no issue relocating to Alberta. I am planning to make a trip up north in the coming weeks and would like to get an idea of where I could start my job search - or who would be good to speak. My ultimate goal will to be an owner operator - but I know I have to start somewhere. I am willing to put long hours.
I appreciate it if you could get back to me....could use 'expert' advice. Thanks.
Looking for advice

Welcome aboard. Try a company driver job first to make sure you like it, and to gain some experience. Then maybe get a job driving FOR a broker first to see what's involved. Don't forget, the key word in 'broker' is 'broke' ! If you're looking into AB, there's always multi unit brokers looking for fluid haulers. JMHO. Good luck.

Thank you for the response. So when you say the key word is broke in broker? Don't mean to ask a stupid question but I don't know what your mean sorry.

That's the point - there's no such thing as a stupid question. Ask a lot and often. I've been both a company driver and a broker (owner operator). I know lot's of brokers who have gone bankrupt because they didn't know what they were getting into and they didn't ask questions. Put a few years into trucking for a company or drive a truck for a broker before you make any big leaps. This forum is full of good info. Pour a pot of coffee this weekend and start surfing the site.

I really appreciate your feedback. I'm doing a huge carrer leap from advertising and personal training and did good at it but now I want something where I can work like200 or moree hours a month and I like working alone. I would not get into trucking down here on the coast cause it seems the industry from what I know is no good anymore . I think I would only want to get into it up in a place like the oilfeilds or in mining so I could work tons of hours. I have no responsibilities down here on the coast so I'm free to work as much a possible if its out there. Your right forsure about testing the waters first to see if I like it. Why and how do O/O goes broke if money and hours can be so good? I'm guessing but is it cause they don't pick the right area of trucking to get into?
